I'll say this much, and it's my opinion, we all know that one...
I used to think vests with a lot of patches was gay. I still do. But a vest with a few nice choice patches looks good. I came back from Iraq earlier this month, and came to the conclussion, F_CK what every one thinks, I'm putting some patches on my vest.
I actually had one made in Afghanistan, with custom embroidered patches (Harley swept wing logo with Afghan campaign ribbon in the bar and a small bar & shield with "Afghanistan" in the bar. Turns out the quality of a custom made Afghan vest is slightly lower than a flea market special here, so I don't wear it - may move the patches to a good vest.
I wear one with no patches when it's too hot for a jacket and I put my gun, ammo, wallet, cell phone and anything else I have to carry in it, like I would with a jacket in cooler weather.
I guess that explains it. I don't carry a gun. My wallet and my phone will fit in my front pockets. Other than my key(s) that's all I carry.
Someone said it keeps your shirt from blowing up? In all the years I've ridden I've never had that problem. I see it on the sport bike guys, but it's never happened to me on my cruisers.
It just occurred to me, you guys wear vests because you don't want to carry purses.
Like others have said your vest should not garner you unwanted attention by itself from any established club. I am not a fan of a vest. I don't care for the weight and it can be warm in the Texas sun. But when I have to wear it you can bet that there is something holstered underneath it. Makes for an easy conceal. I would rather wear a t-shirt with the club logo on it. The vest does feel good when there is a slight chill in the air, which is two weeks out of the year average.
I don't wear mine in the heat of summer but will in the fall and spring because it helps keep me warm. The patches on it mean something to me and that's as it should be. I ain't wearing it for anyone but me.
Can you even carry a loaded pistol where you live? I didn't mention the boot knife but we weren't talking about boots. Great to be from and in Texas where we can sometimes legally shoot the stupid. To answer your question my size makes me feel like a big guy. My pistol has nothing to do with my size except it is easier to conceal a larger frame pistol as a larger man.
