Default Road King Maintenance

Hello,
I will be trying to do my own maintenance on my 2009 FLHR. I did have the dealer doing the maintenance 20K, 25K, and snuck in the 30k while I had the maintenance package that transferred over from my trade in.

My road king has 29k miles on it now and I will be doing most if not all the maintenance work myself.

I was wondering how often what type are some of the maintenance items that you are doing to your touring bikes.

What type of oil and filter and how often 2500, 5000 miles
Tranny fluid what type and how often
anything else...?

My mechanical abilities on bikes it pretty limited but I have changed my pipes x 2, switches, and lowered front end (took fork apart...wasnt fun).

Thanks in advance...

Your owners manual spells out service intervals and a factory service manual will tell you how to do it all, plus lots more. You can download an owners manual on the H-D website if you don't have one - go to the Owners tab.

And after that do a youtube search. There's a ridiculous number of 'how-to' videos there.

You'll get plenty of advice on what type of oil. I use either Redline or Amsoil in my bikes with a Harley filter. I stay away from the Harley oil because it's not a full synthetic. My bike rarely see 5k miles a year so I just change the oil and filter once a year just before winter storage. If you are doing more than 5k miles a year then every 5k miles is good for syn oil. I use Redline shockproof oil in all my trannies. You only need to change it every couple of years or 20k miles. Other standard maintenance items are lube clutch cable and adjust clutch once a year or every 5k miles. There are many other maintenance items that need to be done on a regular basis but if you can do these things you will save yourself a lot of money over time. If you don't have a factory service manual then get one. You will need it. Good luck.

Get the manual, you will be using it.
I use Mobil 1 20w50 V-Twin Syn in all three holes.
K/N 171-C Oil Filter, nice with the 11/16" nut on the bottom, good filter.
5K changes, ride.
