Default Maintenance intervals?

Checked my oil and trans today and was wondering if I needed to change my motor oil? Right now I'm at 56XX on my '09 FLHT. I have already changed my trans oil when I changed my handlebars and clutch cable.

What is the interval?

1K
5K
10K
etc............

Oil change intervals are listed in the Harley Service manual. This question is bound to bring up almost as much interest (argument) as what brand of oil to use. I change my oil every 5,000 miles.

My opinion is that if you are doing it on your own and not at the dealer, then do a full service every 3000 miles. I have done this since I have owned my 06 Street Glide and now it has 72,000 miles on it and is still running strong. It may be a little overkill, but it doesnt cost me $300+ each time and I have a better piece of mind when it is done.

Did you not get an owner's manual with your bike? It's all listed in the back of the manual.

You should have changed everything at the first 1k. After that its every 5k.

oil is cheap.

I intend to keep my bike forever ( many of my bikes,I have owned for more than 10 years---1 I've had for 36 years)

I'm at every 2500~3000 miles- I may stretch it a bit longer if those are all highway miles and I have not encountered severe temperatures.

Yes, I know that synthetic oils are great and the service interval is longer, but I do it myself so the cost is minimal and I decide on the timing.

primary and tranny I go by the manual, and at every change go over and look, feel for any loose bolts- often find these things when washing the bike, before they become problems

*** KEEP your receipts should you ever have a warranty issue and need to show that services have been done

Spend some time off forum and spend the time reading your owner's manual. The info there is more reliable then some (Not all, guys/girls. ) that you may get here.

+1 For doing it yourself. Especially the oils and filters. It's easy.
