....bravo that he did the oil change himself instead of dropping $300 at a HD Dealer but thumbs down for not having the proper tools prior to starting....then again, I start with the proper tools and midway through a job, some mysteriously disappear from the area I'm working in....
Nah. Not at all. In my slightly altered mind state last night I thought this was a good idea. I woke up this morning and said **** no and just walked down to buy a filter wrench
I'm kind of the opinion that if you fire up the engine with new oil and an old filter anyway, what's the point in a new filter, the new oil's already contaminated. That said, there are some service specs on some bikes that suggests changing the filter at every other oil change is perfectly fine. Kind of makes sense, really, shouldn't be any real reason that an oil filter should not keep on doing its job, but that's not my style...I always change filters at the oil change...BUT...before I start the engine. OP, if you've started your engine already, just relax, change the filter when it makes sense to you...if you lose some oil, just replace it. If you don't, all is well.
Dub the doob in the ashtray and back away slowly. I teach you a lesson.
The gravity observation reveals your astuteness is functioning properly.
However, a clash exists in that your oil filter tool does not.
