You can get away with out a clunk for a while, but eventually it will be there, if you want more throw on the clutch try only backing it off a 1/3 or 1/4 of a turn but again first gear clunk is something you should just learn to live with. Look at it this away if you were spinning at 2000 rpm and then were suddenly stopped you'd make noise too.

If mine didn't clunk in 1st gear, I would start troubleshooting the problem. Sweet sound to me........

When I don't want the bike to clunk, I start it in first gear -- of course, with the clutch lever pulled in.
