So I was just on a nice and brutal 300 mile tour. At the very end of it on the highway I was going around 90. Then a cafe styled ducati cam blowing by and my old sport bike days.kicked in. Said.imma catch this biatch... so I did, we played around at high speeds doing stupid things that im sure ill get bashed for and I said f,it..... lets top it out..... so I did
My question is can it be harmful for the engine to be running 110_120 indicated on my 04 king
I know with wind sheer and tire slip I was not going the speed indicated, but could I have harmed the engine going that fast. Lol. When I got home I instantly went looking for oil leaks from gaskets.... I did not hit the rev limiter in any gear, but I was pretty high up there in 5th
Details matter. Peak cooling for horsepower output is around 45 mph. Above that, horsepower output vs mph and you end up with an engine that's still at a safe temp but it's hotter than the engine doing 45. Horsepower required between 110-120 is pretty damn high (almost max), heat generation is high also. I notice some pretty damn high oil temps on days I'm running at high speeds (80-90mph) for an extended period of time, 60-70 miles. Would I recommend 110-120 mph for 60 70 miles on a hot Sacramento day of 110 degrees? Probably not. I've got an oil cooler and run synthetic but on one trip from Sacramento to Modesto (75 miles) and it was 98 degrees, 80-95 mph the whole way, my oil temp was at 280 degrees. Normal for that bike at that temp, 240 degrees. I do ride mine pretty damn hard and I've got 77k miles on the clock and still going strong.
I rode my 2005 EG across HW 50 in UT and NV at consistent speeds above 85 MPH. Went from east Kansas to Sacrament CA. A darn near stock 88. Had SE203 cams, K&N breather element and slip-ons. About 65K on the clock at the time. Changed oil (HD synth) in Sacramento and headed back home. Bike never missed a beat nor did it use any oil. It ran like it was designed for those speeds and temps. (It was mid September and still pretty darn hot out.)
I took the photos using a point and shoot camera I had on a lanyard around my neck. Probably not the smartest thing to do...take one hand off the handlebars at 90 MPH. Note that the oil temp gauge (bottom left) shows nice, cool engine.

Rode my 12 sg to sturgis and back 1600 miles 1 way runnin 90-110mph mostly all the way only stoppin for gas and a quick drink and back on the road. Only problem i noticed was chitty gas mileage. Never burnt a drop of oil. Granted mine has 6th gear runnin around 4000-4300 rpm or so. But id do it all day long and not worry about it.
