Default High idle

Can use some expert advice. My idle goes as high as 2000 normally it's 1100. I've tried resetting by turning ignition on off 6 times. Works now and then. I checked for intake leak using brake clean no change. Thing that bothers me is if I turn grips (throttle) forward brings it down, but even a slight turn. Getting the slight play out of grips will kick it back up. That little play that doesn't turn the throttle.
Thanks for any advice

Do you ALWAYS shut it off at idle, i.e., hand off the grip?

'07-'08 were a bit funny about that from time to time.

Always let it idle down. Even read that turning the cruise off with grip might effect so I now tap the break to disengage cruise.

I've seen this problem before, and I found this advice on a different forum a year ago or so for that situation and it worked:

"it's a throttle by wire issue, you can reset yourself. alot of techs don't know how to without digital tech.
with bike off and the kill switch off, turn the ignition switch on, flip kill switch on, wait about 4 seconds then turn it off, wait 4 seconds then turn to run. cycle through this procedure 3 times. on the fourth time start the bike, the idle should come down. then when you turn the bike off, dont use the kill switch if possible"

Buddy of mine had same problem and this fixed it for him.
Good luck.

Make sure it is at normal idle for a couple seconds before shutting it off. You can also try disconnecting the battery for at least 10 minutes. If you're dealing with an electrical gremlin then sometimes a simple reboot is all it takes.

I had the same problem. I turned my bike off with the kill switch, which I rarely ever do, while the bike was running at 1,500 RPMs & that's where it went when re-started. I drove to the dealership & they did the same as you mentioned. Ignition switch works best for me.

Update! So I've been turning it on off with the ignition switch not the on off switch. I reprogrammed following these instructions and so far so good. Thanks for all the help. The explanation behind what is being done during the reset procedure helped out nicely.

Be lucky yours didn't do what mine did and idle up higher on every downshift one day until I almost red lined it in first gear. I coasted into Tilley HD in Salisbury NC and killed the bike at near red line.
I went in and told the techs what was going on and they didn't believe me. They pushed it into the bay and started it up and it went to red line and shook the dealership. They did that twice then came out looking like they'd seen a ghost. They said an idle control module screw or something like that had come loose and all it needed was to be tightened. It hasn't done it since and that was a few years ago.

Wait a minute, your not supposed to turn your bike off with the run/off switch?

As I understand it using the **** takes your hand off the throttle, this allows the bike to go back to idle and throttle to go back into position. Also the switch is only plastic I've had them break on other bikes.
