I am helping a buddy try to fix his bike. he has an 01 electra glide classic. it keeps blowing the fuse for the lights. we have inspected all wires in the inner fairing, and everything looks fine. we have replaced the fuse and turned ignition on and twisted, pulled, pushed on wiring thru out the bike and everything seems fine, once we stand bike upright from jiffy stand the fuse pops. anyone ever have a problem like this or know where to look? thanks for any suggestions.
remove all the bulbs- you could have a bad filament.
if his bike is lowered the wiring inside the rear fender could be chewed up- you can pull the tire or jack up the bike and remove the shocks to see past the tire.
also check wiring to the front marker light where it goes through the fender hole
IF the fuse material is spattered and you see carbon that indicates a short circuit
if the fuse material seems to have just melted and parted, that is an overload.
IF he has been running ultra hi watt bulbs, he may have damaged the ignition switch
Bike isnt lowered. I have pulled and pushed on front marker light wire with no effect. The fuse blows into several breaks with black markings. Am stumped how we can move every wire without popping fuse, but once we stand bike upright it pops immediately.
Had the same problem on a friends bike. No visible problems but kept blowing lights fuse. Replaced headlight connector and it fixed it. Was not making a good connection and creating heat which if you think about it that's what blows fuses is heat.
He had issues with headlight plug being loose so we replaced that first thing. Not sure if i should disconnect rear harness, passing lamps, etc and test as i plug harnesses back in until fuse pops. Not sure how else to isolate where i am searching.
You have done a lot of checking. Try to narrow it down by unplugging the rear harness plug. Then by unplugging individual lights. I had one (older) that made me scratch my head. The round disk in the signal/running light under the blub had cracked allowing the wire to slide over and go to ground when you hit a bump.
no help to the issue, but when I was chasing down a similar problem I bought a re-setable circuit breaker that plugged into the fuse holder. Made reseting and continuing the trouble shooting much easier.
