Funny how so many Ultra owners want to take off the tour pak and how many street glide owners want to add a tour pack. hmmmmm. I bought the ultra for the utility it provides. Riding it without the tourpak would not make much sense for me.
Back when I had a RoadGlide with detachable luggage rack I remember being somewhere about 900 miles east of home on a road trip with my wife. It's a lot of trouble to start digging through a bunch of stuff bungee corded to your bike Beverly Hillbillies style when you unexpectedly need something. While at a rest stop we were talking to a guy in his early 20's who was doing a huge road trip on something not much larger than a moped,I realized that if I had to still go through the same bungee cord games the kid on a scooter was doing it was time to get a different setup.
Sometimes it's regional,a long day here can have Ya in freezing temps in the morning and t shirt weather on the way home and yeah she has about 30 fancy designer hand bags to choose from and none of 'em are small.
As for rear speakers neither my wife or I would care if we didn't have 'em,front speakers are more than enough.
I would never even consider taking my tour pack off of my bike.
For one person, taking a long trip, that tour pack is a necessity, and for two people, you need a trailer.
Back before my wife started riding her own bike, I finally convinced her that we needed a trailer.
When I told her that I was selling that bike and trailer to my cousin her first words were "you are buying another trailer, right"?
a tour pack is why i just got a ultra, everytime we go for a long ride we never had enough room on the dyna and we ended up loading the bike up to the hilt... now we will have enough room, hopefully
I thought about getting a detach kit. But like many of you mentioned, I think it would be a waste of money. The trunk has me spoiled. And for two up on trips, it is a necessity.
For 2-up you can't beat a tourpac. Solo, looks like you have a Lazy-Boy strapped to the back of the bike. My wife does not ride when it's cold say...November-April. I ride solo then and the tourpac, and lowers come off.
