didnt even dawn on me to put a tuner on before anything else, yes they do run lean from the factory.. if i put a tuner on without any other mods, what else do i need to do so i dont get any codes showing up?
You don't need to retune without any mods. You say you want to change the exhaust and then the air cleaner later. My advice is do it all at once. You will need a retune after changing both so do it all at once and save yourself some money and time. If you don't have the funds to do it all now then wait until you do. The guys at Fuel Moto are experts at this. Check them out.
I wouldn't waste time or money on tuning a stock bike with no mods.
**EDIT**
sorry I was confusing you with someone else. Just get a stage1 A/C from FM and install that for now. This will allow your motor to breath much better than that stock A/C does unless your bike is like mine and came with the SE Ventilator A/C and not the football cover. If that's the case, then stay with what you have and replace the filter with a K&N and you're done with that mod.
Then buy your exhaust (get rid of that cat or get a headpipe also) and tuning device together. Once you make this secondary change in air-flow you do need to tune it in one fashion or another.

thanks guys, it doesnt make sense not to change the pipes if i change the A/C so those are on my list.. and yeah it can be spendy so i will have to wait to see where the funds are and budget them in
But if he is going to make the changes he stated, he isn't going to hurt anything by doing the tuner first.
What's wrong with having a bike that runs better without AC or mufflers?
If a man is doing a stage 1 in 3 steps, the wise move is to start with the tuner.
Personally, I wouldn't waste my time re-tuning a stock bike. It may run a little cooler but that would be the only benefit. From my own experience, it's better to do all the mods you want and tune it then. Doing mods in stages is usually more costly and definitely more time consuming.
