After 20 years of being an X-Sporster ridder, I attended Dayton Bike week recently and got the bug. My wife immediatley knew what was on my mind and gave me the dreaded wife look. Regardless ofmy wife's look, I just purchased a used 2002 Roadking Standard and have a couple of questions. I read somewhere on the web that the 2002 RoadKing can have a Cam tensioner problem. The bike has 22000 miles and was wondering if I should be concerned about the cam tensioner? In addtion, I have been out of biking since the late 70's and is 22,000 miles considered a high milage Harley? My other question concerns two toggle switches in front of the tank. Theright toggle switch truns on the front two side lights, the left switch seem to do nothing. The dealer told me it was a switchused for accessories that is not being used. Would he be correct ? Thanks inadvance for your help and looking forward to being menber of your forum.
WELCOME TO THE TOURING WORLD... NICE PUTT!!! MILEAGE IS REALLY NOTHING AS LONG AS THE PERSON BEFORE YOU TOOK CARE OF IT- WOULD RECOMMEND A SOME ONE YOU CAN TRUST (IF NOT YOU) DO A COMPLETE LOOK OVER (JUST TO BE ON THE SAFE SIDE)... 2ND SWITCH IS AN AUX SWITCH - CAN BE USED FOR JUST ABOUT ANYTHING - I USED IT FOR MY ENGINE GUARD FOG LAMPS... CAM PROBLEM CAN'T HELP YOU WITH BUT I AM SURE IF YOU DO A SERCH HERE (2002 CAM) YOU'LL FIND SOMETHING
Nice bike.
Every used car or bike I have bought, I start out buy doing some baseline maint. At 22K you might want to do one of the service interval inspections. So you will enjoy the bike for years to come.
Welcome and congrats on the RK. 22,000 is not alot of mileage aslong as all the services have been done and they are up to date. About the cam tensioners some say they have got over 50,000 miles with no problems and some say they went to gear drive and it looked like they were pretty wore out. My dad went to gear drive cams on his 02 RK when it had 18,500 miles and the tensioners looked fine. If I where you I'd just ride it and not worry, sooner or later you might want to do a performance upgrade then that would be the time to replace the tensioners or go to gear drive. If you go with gear drive you will never have to worry about it again.

Most of the twin cam harleys share the same tensioner problems, some go formore milesbefore needing replacement than others. Best thing you can do it to check them over by removing the cam cover on the motor and having a look at their condition using a small dental mirror to view the rear one behind the oil pump. Usually at about 25K it's getting close to that time to replace or at least look at the condition. Once they wear to low and come apart, then you are looking at a much bigger problem when the material from the tensioners goes through the oil pump and engine.
22K isn't a lot of miles if it was taken care of. I would suggest to do a complete service and then you know where you are at here. Do the engine, trans, primary and even consider flushing the brake systems with new fluid. The fluid used should be marked on the cover of the master cylinder. I would even do the front forks too so you start off with a fully serviced bike that should give you many trouble free miles. If you have air assist in the front forks, there's a real easy way to change the fork fluid without disassembling the front nacelle to get at the fill caps.
You can get all the help you need here if you choose to do the service yourself which is not difficult at all to do and you know it was done. You also will be saving yourself a good deal of money.
Pick up a factory service manual and there's no reason why you can't do the work yourself.
I also, have an 2002 RK, it has 47000 on it and still runs great. For the toggle switches, your dealer gave you the right scoop. The Cam chain tensioner shoe needs to be change if the wear exceeds 0.080-0.090 IN.. So far I haven't had to change my.
