Before I get all the posts about all the better shocks out there, I just want to say I got a killer deal on a pair of Progressive 940's. I would like to get thoughts from riders who have or had the 940's. I called Progressive yesterday and spoke with a tech who basically told me they where garbage and that the 944 and the new design was the only way to go..... I wonder if the next design will make the 944 garbage also ????
Before I switch out the OEM air shocks for the 940's I would like to know if there will be an improvement. Again, I know there are better shocks out there. I really am not riding too much because of back problems and family so I don't want to drop another 6 or 700 dollars into the bike now.
940's come with heavy duty springs, have the springs changed to light duty.I ran them for 5 years and thought there where better shocks.Let's just say I should have saved 800 dollars, because I can't tell much differance.Let the flamming begin.
I got a good deal on a used pair two years ago and changed the heavy spring out, I've got no complaints and the ol likes them. Any thing is better than those cheap *** air shocks
If you have back problems you really should have bought yourself top-shelf shocks! You'll get a much better riding experience. Plenty of shocks threads, as you are aware, just use Search for '940' - but stand back!
I have the 940's with the HD springs and really like them. I ride 2 up 80% of the time, I'm 225 and the wife is about 175. I have the preload set to about 1 1/2 turns. Thats a little less than Progressive recommends. If I'm solo they are a little stiff, but not that bad. The firmness kinda matches up with the front forks with the "HD Heavy" shock oil.
My wife has a bad back also. The 940's with the HD springs have a little firmer ride but no bottoming out. What really hurts her back is bottoming out, not the firmer ride. She says the 940's are a major improvement over the never adjusted right, always bottoming out air shocks.
I bought my 940's very slightly used from a forum member and have never regretted the purchase.
running them for the last 5 yrs, imo little better then stock.I like the 1" sag ,it was really a band aid for a front end 3/4" sag,,long story. Hard to get adjusted (HD) dialed in just wright, but perform better and dont have to deal with stock air adjuster.I have them set to 1 groove, the 940 will bottom out occasionally unless I adjust it up but then my back hurts....
All in all I havent put the stocks back on,so that tells you something but wish i had saved the 500$ for better.Id say a smoken good deal go for it.

we are about the same WT. Do you change the settings if you ride solo ??
I had 940's on an 08 SG, mine had the heavy duty springs and I hated them. I'm 210, wife 180. Even on the softest setting they were too stiff. Progressive swapped the springs out for me at Sturgis last summer and we both loved the shocks after that. I left them on a softer setting, I just like a softer suspension and after the spring changes we thought the ride was great.
In addition to better shocks, if you have a bad back, seriously consider the Harley Hammock seat. If your shocks bottom out, it does not transfer that shock up your (or your Wife's) spine.
