The GPS unit is the single biggest advance in touring in the last 50 years. It's a tool that's all it is, but what a tool. I've beenusing the 2610 also for the last few years. I plug in the waypoints for a major trip and then give her the command to go. When these things come in real handy is when you're running out of gas or need a place to rest your weary head. Get something you can also easily use in a car or truck. I only use mine on the bike for touring.

Dont know how I ever did with out it. Went for the zumo 550 but mostly for ease, waterproof, came with car&bike mount although switched bike stem(ram) with slightly longer one. Its also got other techno features that I use or will possibly use in the future that are awsome. Here aresome things I never thought of til started using it that are pretty cool.
1-Its like traveling with an instent yellow pages.HD dealers,resturants,gas,lodging,attractions,parks.. on and on are right there.
2-ask a local about there favorite place, restuarant and all you need is the name or part of the name and you are there,(they dont even know they just told you how to get there and the phone number)
3-can extemperainiously pick roads and see where you are going and get unlost if needed.

Took a couple evenings to read directions and figure out the meat and potatos of using a gps.
The more advanced type of directions(maps,routes..ect) Not really neccessary for me.

I have a gps receiver that i connect to my laptop. When I am on a long trip I carry it along and if I get really lost I pull out the laptop to pin point my position and go from there. I really dont care to have one attatched to the bike. The plugin in gpsfor the laptop was only $35 and has never failed me.

I also plan on doing some long trips this summer and just finished up doing a bunch of GPS researching. I decided on the Garmin Zumo 550 and added an 8G SDHC card so I can also use it as an MP3 player. I will have it wired into the bike's stereo so whenever the navigation prompts or alerst are spoken, it will pause the music and play the prompts through the bike's sound system.

I just received the unit yesterday, charged it up last night and will use the weekend to update the firmware and related software and generally play around with it. I think this site was mentioned somewhere in another post but I found it to be a great forum for those who do own a Zumo:

i bought my wife a Garmin street pilot for her b-day. i paid $400 for it at Best Buy. i then received a 12% discount coupon from them and went to return it (or get a refund) for the difference. not only did i get the 12% off, it was on sale. total price dropped to like $225.

it really amazes me every time i use it.

although- i think having one on the bike would be VERY distracting.

I finda gps helps me pay attention to the road more in a way. Instead of looking around for sighns ect. Sometimes I even use the gps to go to places that I already Know the directions to just so I dont have to think and can concentrate on road better. Good point D Vment to add this to original post.

Don't people get lost anymore? Some of my best rides have been found by accident. GPS units locks you in to the same set of paths as everyone else. Don't get me wrong, GPS units are great for cagers or people on a schedule. IMHO touring is not always defined by the destination. Just another opinion, everyones got one.

A GPS only leads youon the route you program into it, whether it's major highways or back roads. Mine has taken me through some places I never would have even thought of going and delivered me right to my destination. I can also choose to ignore it and it recalculates the new route. It also has an off button
