Default let's talk layers?

Been digging thru several older threads. Maybe I just don't know exactly what to search for....

What do you cold weather riders layer up, um... under maybe? I have some canoe/kayak under layers but they are more suited for active use... as in may sweat some. Wicking and all that.

Talking in the 40 degree range. Will good ole cotton type stuff be warmer? Fleece? Ideas?

I just wear heated stuff. Expensive but I've been wearing the same Gerbing gear since 06.

Most times down to the lower 40's I'm pleanty warm with an Under Armour 2.0 thermal top, cotton t-shirt, I have a windproof fleece hoody that goes over that, then on goes my textile jacket that only has a wind/water proof liner with no insulation and that keeps me plenty warm. For my legs I have matching Under Armour 2.0 leggings that I use under my jeans with a good pair of wool socks on my feet I'm good to go.

Just make sure your outer layer blocks wind, a sweat wicking layer against your skin, and some sort of insulating layer between them and you're good to go. for me finding windproof fleece is easy with my hunting gear, and its some of the warmest stuff I have its like magic great insulation properties. Poly propolyne works extremely well too, military surplus has lots of jacket and insulating layer options, I uses one of those poly-propo 1/4 zip jackets for duck hunting. A rule of mine when hunting is to avoid wearing cotton, it doesnt wick moisture... it just holds it and that will make you cold quick! and I know I said I wear a cotton t-shirt when I ride, but that is over a sweat wicking layer so its not directly on my skin, so that helps but I usually dont sweat when I ride in this weather or when I'm getting ready to ride so its usally not an issue, but can be for some or if you're going to make stops and walk around or such. But you'll probably sweat more than you think you do just gearing up to ride... I also suggest prepping OUTSIDE in the cooler weather when gearing up so you dont sweat as much.

wool would also work great as a insulative layer. along with most all synthetic fibers (polys) too. Cotton just holds too much moisture and not enough dry air, and that air is actually your best insulator... after all why do you think polar bears have hollow fur fibers?

Most cotton products arent wind proof either, so heat is easily swept out.

Before I got heated gear I'd wear insulated underware top and bottoms. Heavy jeans, a long flannel shirt with a sweatshirt on top. Carhart insulated overalls and a heavy Jacket and gloves. Full face helmet with something to cover my neck. I've switched to electric gear and wear a turtle neck under my jacket liner, and a jacket to block the wind. Jeans with heated pants over them with chaps on top to block the wind and heavy gloves. Full face helmet with something to cover my neck. I'm good down to freezing. by then they have salted the streets. The bikes stays in the garage till a couple of spring rains wash the salt away.

Survival instructors say "Kotton Kills, Wear Wool". Wool is warm when wet, comparatively speaking.

Underarm or cold weather mock turtle neck, Cleese, and a leather jacket on top. Fleece lined jeans and chaps on the bottom. Winter lined leather gloves.

Lowers help a lot, soft or hard. I think the soft ones block more air. I have yet to find gloves that work well when it's real cold, and I don't want heated gloves, so I just deal with it.

The 3 most important things I've found:

1.Wear a knit cap/beanie that keeps the wind out of your ears and the heat from escaping,if you wear a helmet, use a larger one if it's too snug with a hat underneath.

2.Protect your legs so they don't function as radiators that'll lower your body temp

3.Wear a well designed heavy leather jacket, not the hanging out at the bar cheap garbage leather that's all over the place.I've heard textile jackets are good but all I know is I can get away with not having to wear much on my upper body under my leather,I don't like the multi-layered stiff bundled up feeling.

Buy a good thermal riding outfit..dress normally under it. I have Hein Geriche , ride in some pretty cool temps in Tn...no issue.
