Been really enjoying the ride. Weathers been rough it dropped down to low 70's here. The ride is simply amazing compaired to my old cruiser. And long before pushrods we had "flatheads". I don't need a kickstart, mag or gear shifter to understand the traditions it's all based on. Water cooling is a plus IMHO but was not a major part of my decision.
OP, Congrats on the new ride and it is a gorgeous one at that.
IMO, when comparing the Ultra and the Limited you really only need to look at 2 things; Color and wet head vs. dry (and the ability to take off the lower fairings with the dry head). All of the other differences (heated grips, 6.5 radio, luggage rack, CB, inner fairing, TP power plug, security system)simply make up the difference in price between the two.
If I could do it over again I would have gotten an Ultra over the SGS and added the stuff I wanted or needed for a trip as time went on. Now I am just going to spend twice as much money to turn my SGS into an ultra.

Don't know if anyone told you but the water cooled is more than a EPA device to allow leaner running. While riding in mid 90's down highway it runs about 250 to 260. If I slow down and ride in town it cools down to 220 to 230. Stop in traffic or train crossing and stays at 220 to 235. No more 300 degrees + and having to run in EITMS in hot weather. Hasn't leaked one drop either.
so should you water cool a sportster. I think you totaly know were im coming from. your just justifying your purchase and thats fine. Its my argument on ultra vs limited and its something the op should consider. And frankly if not for the EPA you might just see an air cooled VW again. Its called Nostalgia and thats pretty much the reason Harleys exist since the push rod engine is 1930s technology. And make no mistake about it. It is inferior water cooling. why bother with it. A new VW has a true water cooled engine along with your Chevy
The liquid cooling is NOT an EPA emission inspired addition. Actually higher cylinder temps creates a cleaner/hotter burn which equates to less emissions. Hence the reason you're later model vehicles are using hotter thermostats. The newer vehicles are running at 200 to 215 degrees now as opposed to the 170 to 180's of prior years.
As far as an inferior liquid cooled system, while it may not be a liquid cooled engine, the liquid cooled heads work just fine. The hottest part of the engine is in the combustion chamber, exactly where harley decided to cool it. My bike runs around town at 205 to 235 degrees while air cooled runs around 300. I'll opt for the cooler engine temps on my engines, and on my right leg.
As far as purchase justification, the only one I had to justify it to, was me. I surely don't need to justify anything I do to a world of forum members.
I'm not arguing anything. Strictly from a price versus options for my liking, the Limited makes economical sense.
i don't have a new bike but comparing my old 2010 Ultra Classic and my 2013 Limited was like night and day.....course, it had the 103 in it so that helped. I looked at some of the new 2014's when they came out and drooled over them for awhile but i couldn't see much of an advantage, for me anyway, in going to the 2014 limited. i did like the new design of the bags and trunk and the looks of the new dash and infoment center but i've got my zumo set up on my bike center mounted and that works for me. besides, after i did the stage one, it seemed to really wake the ol girl up. go limited or don't go at all.

Where/how are you taking the temps from road to town riding?

I have Power Vision mounted and monitor it real time on the screen. Can monitor head temp, Intake Air Temp, Engine temp, and water temp. Have also done data logs and it records it for you to look at later. Can actually look at temp while riding and it will be 250 or so and pull into the parking lot at dealership and it will be on 220 by the time I stop.

Very impressive! IMO, controlling Temp's as illustrated will result in enhanced durability.

ahh. thats what your doing now. justifying to a forum member. hey. im glad for your purchase with your hard earned cash but why do all other water cooled engines in the world of water cooled engines have complete circulation around the cylinder. because its superior thats why. harleys deal is inferior and done for cost cutting on there so called water cooled engine. . as far as ultra vs limited and the extras you get, well yeah. thats a no brainer. as for me. id love the limited with all its bells and whistles minus the wet head set up.
