Sounds like he is getting "kickback" which happens when the engine stops on a compression stroke and you try to start it when it is hot, mainly in summer months.
A compression release or EZ start cams are what is really needed. Most of the newer bikes come from the factory with compression releases built into the heads now. 2008, 2009 and 2010, not so much.
My dealer installed manual compression release for free under warranty, they even waived the $50 deductible to see if it would fix the issue and it didn't ...new comp fixed it for me.
'08 FLHTPI (cop bike) with 52K and the original comp with no issues so far...I'm chalking it up to auto comp releases since day 1...even still, probably on borrowed time.
Sort of on an old thread but it is still valid.
Just ordered a All ***** Starter Drive Clutch for Harley Davidson Touring Bagger 79-2104 as I have been having starting issues.
Starter really drug hard yesterday for a moment when starting.
Didn't think that it would start but it did after dragging for a second or so.
The starter clutch is a sprag clutch. Basically it drives with pins. Once the gas motor starts up, if the starter switch is held down a little long, or on hot starts, one cylinder explodes the mixture and spins the motor forward extremely hard (happen often with tuners improperly set) the gas motor outruns the starter and the pins ramp up and no longer drive. This prevents the gas motor from spinning the starter motor and slinging the windings out of the armature.
