Default Thinking about selling and moving up or doing some upgrades

2001 Road King Police, 88CI mild cam, carbureted, VH Big Shot Dual exhaust; 37K miles.

I have been thinking about painting and keeping the bike, along with a 98" bore kit and Memphis Shades batwing.

or

Selling the bike and moving up to something newer.

It has been a good bike - got me to Sturgis and back. Only problem I had with it was the stator. If I sell, I could only get about $7K for it; then, I'll have to come up with at least 5-7K$ to get something nice. I'm sure a dealer wouldn't give me very much at all. It has been a good bike, I just want something with some more power. Then again, I have also thought about getting an EVO... maybe a Tour Glide, if I could find one.

At least I got some time to think.... before the next road trip.

What you guys think? I definitely don't want a payment.

Well, I would suggest a 98" kit from Scott at Hillside. Describe to him your riding style and desires and he'll fix you up without selling you something you don't need. A straight shooter. I love what he did for me. At 37,000, you have a lot of miles left on that bike, and a big bore kit, if you do the work yourself, should cost you less than $1000. A newer bike sounds nice until the payments kick in. JMHO.

Hey QC, thanks for the reply. I agree, still a lot of miles to go on this thing. It has been a good bike.

I know the feeling of the "itch." Just paid mine off and I can't deny it's there. Spending $$ to upgrade and feel secure about it a wise idea, again just my opinion. A well planned BB kit will breathe new life into an old flame. Scott will make a kit that works together for you, just be honest with yourself and him. Jugs and pistons and a gasket kit from him was right at $600. I did the cams the previous year for $900 including the tools. But i did the work myself. Good luck.

I was hoping to only spend about $800 on the motor, then maybe $1500 on paint.

Just remember what ever ya put into it ya will never get back. If ya really like it and plan on keeping it fine. My '09 will be my last bike and it is about done. Nothing wrong with that. But if ya are thinking about trading for a newer one now, ya will sooner or later... That itch never seems to go away???

i went down this road a little while back. My RK is in pieces waiting on some parts to show. I went a little further than jugs and pistons and since im waiting, I'm contemplating heads. My decision hinged on the fact that I still like the look and fit of my old friend. It just needed some more jump!

You have the best twin cam ever made. Carbed with a good crank. That bike will outlast you and, with a little cash, keep with with anything newer...I'd rather have your bike over a newer one like mine...
