Well, I am gonna attempt to attach this kit myself. I just got the detachable hardware for the bikes, and went over the instructions. Has anyone done this to their bike yet. I just was lookin for a few pointers that may not be in the instructions. The dealer claimed it takes 2 hours. In my opinion, it looks closer to 1 hour. Who knows. Part number is 53803-06.
You will find that the instructions are brutal, the instructions cover many models at the same time, so read carefully and when at the end you have spare partsleft over, dont be surprised.
i just completed this install on my rk classic. as mentioned ,the instructions are not great,,,the pictures are a bit better. but in the end i did it in less than an hour. as far as pointers i'd say dont tighten anything,, i took it apart twice before i got it right. once you get into it and get an idea for the thing its not too tough
Yes, the instructions are bad. It's good to see a bike with one on it before you start. Regardless, just keep in mind that the mount has to fit on the rubber washers after you are all done. Basically, that means both sides of the bike must have the same number and sequence of parts - spacers, washers, etc. Before you tighten everything, put the mount up next to all the washers and see if it looks right.
At least putting this stuff on has nothing to do with starting your bike. It's not the end of riding. About an hour and a cup of common sense and patience and it's done.
... another word of caution, be careful that you don't use the wrong length bolts towards the back end of the mounts. The wrong size length will allow you tighten it down all the way till it touches (then dents) your rear fender. Ouch! You won't be able to see the damage (especially with the bags mounted back on), but I have walked up and down many dealers inventory that have installed it that way. To avoid this, you will need to either use the original stock bolts or use washers to shim the difference. Otherwize this kit was a breeze to install. Let us know how it goes.
Ok, I went ahaed and installed this per the dumb instructions, and the backrest is still on backorder. The directions were absolutly brutal. Who's the retard that wrote them? Anyhow It's on and all is weel. I can't wait for my backrest to come in.
