So I recently took my 2014 street glide to the local dealer to have a problem with the exhaust checked out. Everything is pretty much stock with exception of RC components slip ons.The rattling I'm hearing is coming from the rear of the bike. The dealer checked the bike with a stethoscope and told me it was a defective motor mount. They replaced the mount and I rode the bike no more than a quarter of a mile and started hearing the rattling again. The rattling seems to be coming from the cross brace in the exhaust under the center of the bike. The technician said this was totally normal, however I disagree. I haven't heard any other motorcycles do this. The best way to describe the sound is to take a screwdriver and bang it around in a can. Although the technician says that the motorcycle is running according to Harley Davidson standards I have to disagree. Have any of you have the same issues with your bike?
when the bike is sitting idle I can take my boot and lift up on the pipe and the rattling stops.could this be the cross brace or do you still think it is a broken baffle?
Sounds like the pipe support is too low; if they hang the pipe off the saddle bag support take your bags off and try lifting the can. That way you can see if they're hanging loose.
After many miles and overloading the bags so many times I had the same issue on my '07.
Easy enough to adjust, though you may want to replace the rubber mounts too. I've been through a few of those over the years, when I buy them I always get an extra set to keep on the bench.
Highly UNLIKELY that a baffle is your problem given the fact that if you put your foot on the muffler the rattle stops. Many times the insulators that support the mufflers cause problems. Be sure that they are located properly. I've seen a tiny bit of lubricant on the insulators resolve what sounds like a rattle ... just my .02 cents worth.
I have had two separate rattles related to my exhaust. First was the clamps that hold the heat shields on. They seemed tight, but when I tried to tighten them up, they stripped out. Replaced them with new, and also had to be sure the shields weren't touching, even in the slightest. The second was the rubber on the rear hanger worked its way out. Actually made it sound like a rod was knocking.
Thanks for all of the responses. I plan on taking it in when I get theclutch recall done. I am taking it to a different dealer in my area. I am donewith the one I spoke of. (The dealer name was intently left out to protect theinnocent. ) It is still under warranty, hopefully they can figure it out.Again, thanks for all the responses.
I second getting new rubbers, that's what fixed the rattle on my 2012 and they are cheap enough to try. Also, the bolt that holds the crossover pipe to the tranny fell out on my 2010 and I found the clamp on my driveway. Take a look under there...
I had a similar rattle and could lift the left side up and it would stop. I checked the crossover and hanger they were tight. After getting aggravated trying to find the where the noise was coming from, I decided to replace all the exhaust clamps , when I took the cross over out I seen the gasket was assed up pretty bad long story short I replaced the cross over gasket where the head pipe joins and the rattle noise is now gone.
