Default Removing cam gears

Am in middle of cam change, and just removed the cam chain tensioner. I saw a video once where the guy put his bike in 6th gear and on the ground, and loosened the two bolts holding the cam gears on. The manual says to put a special tool between the two sprockets. I don't have the special tool to put inbetween the gears. Does using 6th gear cause any more wear to the gears, bearings, or whatever?? Opinions please.

That's what I saw on the video, but does it hurt the motor? Why does MoCo say to use the special tool that jams between the two sprockets?

Because it is somewhat easier to use the tool.

He is replacing the chain with gear drive so wondered whether this might not be a good way if one plans to reuse the parts.

The tool is to keep the teeth stationary for a moment while you break the bolts loose. Does not hurt anything putting the rear on the ground. It is to stop the motor from making a revolution when you try to loosen the bolt. Nothing moves with the rear tire on the ground.

You can also do it by leaving it on the lift. Just put the bike in 6th, and then hold down on the rear brake pedal with your right arm while you crack the cam and crank bolts loose. You can use the same method when you are torquing them back on.
