Compensator Lifespan
Another fellow around here rides his bike like it's a crotch rocket (high revs) and he's never replaced his in over 50k.
Me, I'm replacing my first at 20k on this bike and my last bike is still going at 45k on the original with a new owner...
All of these bikes are 09s and 10s. It's weird.
For those who have replaced 2 and 3 times already.... I would have walked away. Perhaps it's not such a big deal and to be honest I really don't know but I can't help but think they've been building these bikes since 19 friggin 03. Why. I plan to ride to FL in the spring and I should have to pay a dealer or educate myself, open up the the case, and determine if the bike will make it? F that. I didn't buy a basket case. or did I. sorry for the rant.

Replaced one at 27k
Replaced one at 50K
Replaced one at 64K (The latest, greatest Screaming Eagle one)
Now have 105K and the compensator is still running strong.
and I don't baby my bikes, I whip them hard.
My '13 FLTRU had the factory comp. replaced this Aug. under warranty @ 11000 miles. I think my riding style is pretty much the same on both bikes.
You tell me.
The Best of Harley-Davidson for Lifelong Riders
I'll keep all the information that I got on why these wear and what they think will work better to myself until they are ready to introduce their product.
The Compensaver will flood the sprocket and ramps with oil which is where a lot of the wear occurs. The other place that wears is the sprocket extension. Thus the new 14 comp that is supposed to get oil to this part of the comp although it is not really a complete fix, more of a revision that fools you into thinking the problem has been addressed. It is like going from an Iphone 5 to an Iphone 5S. "oooh, check it out more storage!" Oooh, the camera opens quicker but still takes the same quality picture".
The funny thing is that if there is a company that has the time adn money to design this product to make it so it will not fail you would think it would be Harley. But that revenue stream from all those failed comp's really is nice. Lots of money to made on that labor too.
So I ride my bike around 3k RPM. I consider riding at 2500 to be lugging. Maybe that is why I got 30K and never had an issue until I hit 19K consisting of one clunk before I drove another 5000 miles and it started to make noise regularly.
I used regular primary oil Drag Specialties brand except when my stater was replaced under warranty they put in S/E Synth. The stater was done at 19k miles so most of the miles were with regular cheap oil.
Started my bike today and it sounds completely different with a new comp and the Compensaver. It's funny how you can get used to excessive noise when you ride the bike every day it just "sounds like it sounds."
Looking forward to other after market compensators as some people are more than willing to invest the time and money in a project and come up with a better solution. Until then my Compesnaver will hopefully save the day.
