It depends if you want the complete Sturgis experience go the week of the rally. If you want less crowds, more open roads and most of the vendors already there or setting up go the week before the rally starts. The week after the rally, Sturgis is a ghost town and the roads are clear.
Stayed here. Only went once and split a small cabin with friends. Other friends had their RV there. They also had Tent camping and motel rooms. A nice lodge type building for breakfast and dinner and a nice pavilion just to hang. Bout 25 miles from Sturgis (same road, amazing ride) and a couple miles from Cheyanne Crossing (Spearfish Canyon). Just had the best time. Very Chill and laid back. Not sure bout reservations.
Rec Springs is a nice place. I stayed there a couple times.
There are no hotel rooms now, much less last minute. We are looking at houses, we want to go Wednesday-Wednesday july 29th-aug 5th. There seems to be a lot of houses.... Crowds are estimated to be 1million +
Got our place just outside of Lead rented the week after this past rally back in August. 3 bedroom cabin. Rolling in the Friday before the rally & staying until the Monday after the rally. With the kids, me & the wife haven't had a vacation in 7 years so we both are looking forward to it. She rides her own as well, so she majorly stoked about riding out there. Crowds don't bother us, but we'll see how she likes grid lock traffic lol
We went this year (2014). Stayed in Deadwood for the first time. That was awesome because everyone eventually rides through and/or stops in Deadwood. We taxied it into Sturgis as trying to find somewhere to put your bike and then have a few drinks , you don't want to be riding after that. Did the ride around etc the first time I was at Sturgis. Usually we don't pre-book and then we stay in Rapid City . There are always cancellations. However you are always taking your chances. Next year (2015 which starts after midnight tonight) , during the 75th. we are heading to Oregon/California along coast. For me, I love all the small towns on the ride to Sturgis as much or more then the actual event. Everyone is so welcoming and friendly. When I first started riding in the early 70's you had to hide your bike and dust yourself off, put our hair up under your hat or they wouldn't even rent you a hotel room at all!
Either way, HAPPY NEW YEAR ! Hope you enjoy Sturgis if you go.

no so much a 70s thing as a today thing......4 years ago coming home alone from Sturgis it was 1100 at night cold and pitch black out I pulled into Worthington and the lady at a hotel asked me where I was from and then told me to go back there....I was kinda set back and thought this bitch talking down to me???walked out to my bike and she followed to make sure I left and when she walked me to the bike I told her to go.....well you know....come to find out she was also the manager at the hotels across the street......was almost checked into a room across the street when she came in and said I had to leave there also.....it was a bit warmer ride the next 150 miles I was so pissed off....

I liked Deadwood also! Never thought of a cab into Stugis! What did that cost? Was it hard to get a cab back home to Deadwood? Great option! Let me know thanks!

Cabs?! Try shuttles; there's a multitude of stops for small shuttle busses, they have fixed times throughout the night departures, you can choose which one to leave at, be in that place iat that time, and they'll take you home. I come from Spearfish (17 mi.), it's almost always a $25 round trip. Well worth it.
I'll be there 10 days this year, starting Thursday before. Plan to arrive, ride in and get my patches, and after that, I don't give a damn. I'll sit at camp on a recliner all week if I want to.
It's year 11 for me, and I'm a bit worried about the crowds. We've decided the best way to get through the week will be to do all the rides reversed routes.
