I have been looking for some new mufflers to give me a little better sound. All I have been able to find require re-packing sooner or latter. I do about 10 to 14k a year touring with my wife and don't want to be repacking mufflers after every ride.
How long does the packing typically last in the mufflers and are there any after market mufflers that will give me a better sound and have no packing or mechanical baffles.

Have you run your Slip-ons without any packing yet? I have some V&H on an EGlide which blew out the packing 1000's of miles ago...I haven't looked back (no pun intended). I also usually have a passenger...eh, what's that, I didn't hear you
I'm not an expert on mufflers but the fiberglass packing or wrap on the baffles gives a quieter sound and a deeper tone on the mufflers. If it still sounds good after awhile, I would leave it as-is. By the time you need to repack, it's probably a good idea to change out the baffles and many manufacturers provide already packed baffles.
I have Rush Big Louies and they still sound great after 2 years.
"Proof is the pudding". If what's coming out the back is acceptable...no change/effort needed. Not acceptable?...change/effort needed.
I seem to remember the day (years ago) that the exhaust note had the most change. Going for ride, start bike, maybe a small "pop", hmm... "sounds a little different", gotta go. By the time i got back home, i had forgotten about it
.
Hit up some bike nights and see what others are running.. YouTube is decent but suffers from chappy recordings.. Every single person in here is going to have a different opinion on their sound
The old "glass pack" mufflers burned out pretty quick but modern packing lasts a long time. I have not felt the need to re-pack a muffler for thirty years or so...
