Well I want to change my useless outside air temp gauge to an oil temp gauge but the harley one for the bike is discontinued. Any suggestions that I can use that will look similar to the harley one and what I will need to make it work? I have checked the threads here and no one seems to have another option that gives any specifics. Thanks in advance
Having a temp gauge on the oil- is it really of any practical use?
( like more so than the air temp...)
should a rider be in stop and go which would make for a hot motor, the EITMS will activate, letting the rider know that the motor is hotter than usual.
other wise an eye on the pressure gauge would show a drop in pressure should the oil loose viscosity due to heat.
I considered and don;t think the swap is worth the extra cash.
that said, I see used ones show up on the classifieds from time to time, probably owners stripping down a soon-to-be-traded bike
A temperature guage actually helped my friend avoid potential engine damage. He had just changed cams. After getting everything buttoned-up, he started up the bike and went riding. He was making no power and the engine oil temperature (on the oil temp gauge) was rising very rapidly and in a short time went well above 300 degrees. Long story short, the low power and extreme oil temps led him to suspect that he was sumping oil. Sure enough, one of the three oil pump O-rings had a major tear and was not sealing. Oil had flooded the crank area. Replacing the O-ring fixed the problem. The oil temp guage worked well for him in this situation to provide an indication that something was not normal.
I installed one on mine years ago and wouldn't want to do without it. As far as the cost? They are relatively inexpensive in my opinion when compared to some of the other **** we install on these bikes.
