Security Light Stays on and No Speed and Tac Ometer Function
I have left the lights on my 06 StreetGlide, so naturally after an hour, it drained the battery. We tried to kick start by pushing and popping the clutch on second gear but it didn't work. Because the battery drained totally, we tried jump start with just one bike but that wasn't enough power. So, we hooked up three bikes; one from a battery terminal to my cigaret lighter and two with cables to my main battery. Finally, it drew enough power and my bike started. However, I discovered that the security key light stayed on and I had no turn signals, no brake signal, and I had no speed and tacometer. After the PGR mission, I went home to figure out why my lights, speed and tacometer was malfunctioning. So here's what I did to troubleshoot the issue:
1. Check all fuses to see if one is burned out - replaced one
2. Disconnected the battery terminals from the battery - waited about 10 to 15 minutes
3. Reconnected the battery terminals.
After putting my bike together, I started her back up and the security key light stayed off and the tacometer was functioning, and all lights was functioning. However, I had to take it for a short ride to see if the speedometer will function as well; it did. This troubleshooting process saved me some HD (hundred dollars - LOL), and everything is working fine now and I'm back on the road.
Hope this post will help other HD riders.
Hold up.
trying to charge a discharged battery from the bikes changing system can take out the stator or regulator.
the added "weight" of the duff battery exceeds the capacity of the charging system.
so before you do anything else- charge the battery fully.
otherwise a $100 problem ( battery) becomes a $600 problem ( charging system)
I would guess that the blowed fuse was the one on your lighter- the power your bike was trying to draw through that hole exceeded the fuse rating- just as well, you could have burned up the wiring.
although a blowed acc circuit fuse will take out the speedo and tach on some models
some of us with TBW find that using the ign switch to shut off the bike works best. or habitually locking your bike will ensure that the lights are off when it is parked
