My 2013 Ultra has always been noisy. Harley dealer replaced lifters with S&S while it was still under warranty at around 8k miles.. Quieted down some but the dang thing was still noisy until warmed up. Just recently I took it to an Indy to get new tires and asked him to listen to it cold. 40k on it now, he said that it is just a noisy engine and could very well be piston slap. He said he could tear it down and inspect everything, replace some components, but the bottom line is it may still be noisy and I would be out thousands. Said to run the "b*tch" and try running non-synthetic. My plan is to run it until it won't anymore, then go with new engine - with new noises lol. I like the bike a lot, don't like the newer ones much, so that is the route I will most likely take. Good luck. Jim

can anyone explain to me how bumping the starter once or twice will help stop lifter noise on start up ??

Not time to change them out unless you just like to spend money and time. This is probably lifter rattle and is common in touring models or maybe all models. Your "destruction" at 1K isn't common... and who knows what the cause was but rattling lifters wasn't it.. or every 103 touring would be destroyed.
