I installed one in my buddies 90 EG Classic over 20 years ago; buddy died, mutual friend of our bought the bike & still working well today. Only thing was I hadda cut the shims down; primary cover wouldn't fit over them.

No, not unless it is completely torn up. With no more miles then you have, usually there is not enough flex in chain to just get clutch hub off either and the compensator and all must come off.

With the difficulties with the Hayden, I'm surprised that this is the first thread that there seems to be a problem. From the first day I read about the Hayden I suspected it was much like the spring only cam chain tensioners, guaranteed to fail early. Still running my stock tensioner at 70,000 miles.

The automatic tensioner should work fine as long as you do not have a lot of wear in the chain pins. It always wears uneven and so with the sprockets. If you check tension, there should not be more the 1/2" of difference between the tight and loose position. Also remember, with the auto one, you will see about 1/4" of chain slop and a little more then 1/8 more added to the 1/4 when you push pretty hard on chain to squash the bottom coil springs. This is why the auto one is so quite. If you get to much uneven chain wear, it can jump one notch too tight.

I wouldn't even bother putting that thing back in. To many issues.

Default Hayden at 3000 miles
This is a post I made on 7/6/13

I've had my Hayden in my 11 king for the last 3000 miles and I have no vibration issues. Mine also only had 1/4" clearance and it made my chain very tight. This week I'm doing the 20000 mile service and I'm going to pull the cover off and see how it looks, as for that whining sound, it's still there along with all the clunking.

Today 7/9/13
I did the service today with 2981 miles on the Hayden. I took off the primary cover and I fond the chain had eaten in to the Hayden 3/16". To me it looks like it's about half way through the front of the shoe.
I took a pic with my phone and my Son is here and he is going to try to post the pic. I only have a pic with it still on my bike but you can see how much the chain is in to the Hayden.
One good thing is I now have the 1/2" clearance on the bottom of the shoe. The chain is still very tight and I still have not felt or can I hear any improvement with the Hayden other then it will move up and down when starting the bike.
Maybe this is normal, I'm calling Hayden up Tomorrow and see if this is, and see if Kathy could come on here and look at the pic.
I will up-date.

Thank you for the help so far, guys. It's funny that I put the Hayden tensioner in to alleviate stress on the IPB and now it looks like it may have caused a failure.

is a video I made of the whine a while back (before I parked the bike).

Oh darn, I had heard about the new spring set Hayden has out for the M6 and had them send me one. They're about 1/4" shorter than the originals, Same stiffness. I had removed mine after about 1500 miles, Too tight. And was thinking about re-installing it next oil change with the new spring set as I hadn't heard or read anything lately about the shoes self destructing as some have in the past. I think i'll pass on that now. I have also been following the threads on the Baker Drivetrain Compensator, Which I WILL be installing sooner or later along with their Manual Adjuster since it will render my Compensaver and the 2014 Outer Primary Cover I bought for the SE comp obsolete. I'm sure I can get a few bucks back selling them after removing.
