I just put this helmet lock on my engine guard. I have to say, I don't know why this product has received so many negative comments. I don't think it detracts from the looks of my bike at all and it works flawlessly. When I'm on a trip, my tour pak is fully loaded so there is no room for my helmet. I always just put it on one of the mirrors or on the seat. I have to admit that when it's out of sight I worry about someone just walking by and lifting it. Apparently Kuryakyn makes the H-D helmet lock because they are identical. Some of the negative feedback complains that you have to use the key to lock and unlock. I see this as a safety feature to avoid accidentally locking it without having the key with you. I would recommend this product if you are thinking about buying one. BTW, I got mine on ebay for $23.75 with free shipping. The H-D model is $27.95.
I just installed the HD one a couple weeks ago right under my highway peg on the crash bar. It blends in just fine being chrome, and the only quibble I could make would be that it comes with standard lock keys. I didn't investigate whether a keyed barrel lock from Harley (for, say, the tourpak) could somehow be swapped in before tightening the security screws.
I looked into installing one of the engine guard helmet locks on my bike but instead opted for the "Helmetlok". I attach the Helmetlok to my passenger grab rail, Tour-Pak luggage rack, engine guard or some other attachment place on the motorcycle. I can also use the Helmetlok along with a coiled security cord to lock my jacket or luggage to the bike.
I use this one, it's bigger and easy to hang 2 helmets from, anywhere you want to swing 'em from. Padded at the bar, too. I keep it in a bag, easy on and off.
I got the one from Harley and it will not fit on the engine crash bar. The inside diameter is too small. Really can't find a good place for it. About the only place it will fit is the frame down tubes and that won't work well. Money wasted.
I had the same problem as the OP. The storage space is always full when touring. I used the Kuryakyn locks on a couple bikes, but switched to a cable lock so I can put the helmets on the mirrors nd lock the on. That way the helmet stays dry if it rains while you are off the bike. The other type of locks hold the helmet in such a way that a whole lot of water will get in. I know this from experience.
It's not clear from your post which particular lock product from Harley you are referring to. The Helmetlok product I referred to earlier does fit on the crash bar.
