5th gear whines but it's really no big deal for 95% of us. The first time I heard it I thought "wow, so that's what all the fuss is about..." EFI is set lean from the factory for EPA compliance. Get slip-ons, air cleaner, and a fuel management system like PCIII or SERT or Thundermax or DTT or FuelPak. FuelMoto can set you up with Rush or Supertrapp slip-ons, PCIII, K&N and a pre-loaded map for a package price. Or ride it stock. Just don't upgrade a/c and exhaust w/o remapping the EFI or you'll run super-lean.

You'll love it!!!

I bought mine in January. Yes for the problems, however, the problems are not problems if you know whats going on. The engine is running on a fuel mixture of 14.7 to one to comply with the federal EPA crap.(lean running means hotter) The 5th gear is noisy, the gear is straight cut (stronger) you can hear it sing on accel. You can consider the problems normal and not problems. Here is what to expect and what I did...It will run good ,you will like it, however the 6th gear will be useless unless you ride alone and above 70mph (only stock, read on!) if you are in stop and go traffic or idling very long at stops you will feel the heat and won't like it (you will worry if it is hurting your engine) ................I did a lot of reading and asking questions and decided to spend some dollars. I bought (RJS Orignals "No more fired thighs")http://www.rjsoriginals.com/ I like the look and function of this product, shield the heat from the rear cylinder from burning your legs. .....I then went with a new computer to change the fuel mixture(to get more power and to run cooler)
I didn't want to have to keep taking it in to have it run on a dyno, so I went with the ThunderMax with Auto Tune.
http://www.thunder-max.com/Products/...timonials.aspxfrom Zippers. BTW, the owner of RJS offered to custom build me shields to my taste if I didn't like the product (I thought it didn't cover the rear exhaust enough) I liked the product. Zippers customer support was just as good , they installed the correct map in the computer for me and offered to help me in any way , I talked with them twice for a long time. Both companies were very good people. The Thundermax is auto tuning and came with wide band O2 sensors.
I installed a K&N air filter kit (RK-3909) and slip on exhaust (SupperTrapp SE's) I bought both of these items from http://www.fuelmotousa.com/ I am having my first servcie done at the end of the week. I am going with Amsoil 20w-50 in the engine and primary along with Amsoil 75w-110 ( new gear lube ) in the trans , it should hush up the 5th gear some. I wanted more than the 75w-90 but didn't go with the 140.
Here is what I can report. WOW, ! WOW, ! WOW, ! now after spending about $1600 more, it has made my 21K Ultra worth the money.
You would not believe the difference,....don't run as hot, tons more torque and power, sounds like a Harley and the 6th gear is very much useable, I mean used a ton, Dang fine product. I can now ride two up and use 6th no problem , I can even use 6th when I'm alone down to 50mph and 1800rpms, I can short shift all I want and torque my way up low rpms. Whole different bike. IMO, with the 96-6speed this type of mods are a must. I went with the Thundermax and I will sing the praise ! Well worth the cost.
Back to your orignal question, Now I say NO, no problems....LOL

Or you can basically leave it alone and it will still be a stroker compared to earlier versions. Ive read alot of stuff about gear whining, but to me it is not very noticable and sounds like well, a harley. All the above is true if you want to spend the money, but leaving it alone is just fine.Since its now a bigger motor, even the stock mufflers dont suck like they used to. Not as loud as aftermarket pipes but maybe your neighbors will appreciate it.

I disagree a bit with SoCal. I would wait until the 5k service to add the synthetic oils. Just my opinion. But have heard it is a good idea to let all the sealsseat themselvescorrectly before changing. But the choice is yours. Do the services if you are able to.And don't hesitate to ask questions here. A lot of good advice to be had here, and welcome to the family. Now get out and ride. Be safe and watch out for the idiots.
