Default RE: Question for the Motor Heads....Phil?

ORIGINAL: GlideMan

I take delivery of my new 07 S/G any day now (scheduled for 20th) and have to ask...I bought Rinehart True Duals, Wimmer A/C, and a Thundermax arrived today from Bart (thank you Sir). Would this bike benefit from cams with the stage 1 at this time or are cams a waste of time without doing the heads and top end just yet?

A ask only because I have seen some impressive dyno numbers from a couple others (i.e. 90+ HP & TQ) with stock heads on a big twin. Is this the case with the 96" or is doing the cams only recommended with heads. I was planing on heads and pistons, but not till next year. If it's beneficial to do cams right now and the heads later, what is the maximum cam size that can work both now, and with future head work? Any help is appreciated as I am new to big twin series motors.

Glideman:
You might be pleasantly surprised with that combination.
My stage-1 bike with DTT runs pretty strong.
I kinda had the same thoughts as you a few months ago. After the DTT install, I'm glad I held off.
Now I'll just save up for the complete top-end build this fall.

Best of Luck Though in Whatever you Decide.

Thanks for the input everyone. I used to answer this question when people would ask me about Sportster builds on 1200's, but just didn't know how a 96" would respond to cams only. With the 1200's, you really need the heads done in order to wake them up and cams alone made very little difference. I'm suspecting that big twins will recieve the cams with a little more power, but probably still not enough to make it worth it as the grind will be relatively weak given what a stroker with better heads will accept for lift and duration.

I went to the dealer this afternoon and asked it my bike arrivedthis week and dealer said nope. Hoping for next weeks delivery now and will have to ride my little pocket rocket XL50 until it arrives. Looks like my plans for this summer will be to break it in with the stage 1 mix, and i'll add someheads andcams next winter. Again, thanks for the input folks. I appreciate hearing from those with BT experience.

Graeme
