Also keep in mind, a lot of veterans here. Between retirement pay from active duty and some who are getting a disability rating through the VA, that can account for thousands per month in "extra" income on top of their normal jobs.
I refer to my VA disability check as my "slush fund". LMAO!
Some people have lots of money, and 25k is nothing to them. Some are using the money that should be going in to their retirement and won't have anything for their retirement.
.....
Too many folks aren't thinking about their future; knew a guy that made less than me, just had to have a high end vehicle still in warranty, and when his son started college, couldn't help him financially because he'd just taken out a second mortgage for a new Suburban and was tapped out on cash flow. Don't think he thought it through very well, will still owe a lot on that loan when the truck needs replacing. Good lesson for the kid though, worked his way through college and not following in Dad's spending footsteps. These people are going to find out their health goes, or the job goes, and then their lifestyle is drops in the toilet. My job ended when I had just turned 62, felt I was very fortunate to still be able to handle a retirement less than expected. But I drive a van that cost $3800, not a new Suburban; doesn't bother me at all - like having it in the garage while other folks drive their new Suburbans in rush hour traffic every morning...
Lot of folks riding new Harleys, driving expensive cages, can easily afford it, but I wouldn't be surprised if over half of them are just being foolish and jeopardizing their futures.
I always wondered why! Seems to me, and, (for those that may believe I am dictating that everyone do as I do), this is just my opinion...
If you never own a bike for more than 2-3 years, how do you come to feel it is ever actually yours? Would kinda be like renting to me. Takes me at least three years to fully get to know my bike, inside out of course.
I don't buy things to impress anyone. I have never felt jealous of things other people own. If I want something, and can't afford it, I'll build it or fix a broken one. That's where the greatest joy of owning anything comes from IMHO.
That's just me, I don't care to discuss the good or the bad about anyone who does otherwise.
I just bought a 2015 Ultra. I'm retired and have a good retirement income. But I tell everybody I don't have a boat or a camper or a vacation cabin, quit hunting quite some time ago and quit chasing women when I found a good one. Our car is seven years old and paid for. I rode inexpensive metric motorcycles until I could afford 50% down payment. The rest is financed at the credit union for 48 months at 2.99%.
I see all these new $25k bikes riding around town. I'm riding a 06 rk and want a newer street glide or Electra glide but being a divorced single father I just can't make the payment on a firefighters salary but I see several guys everyday with new shiney harleys. Man, I'm so jealous
Don't lose focus. 06 RK is a nice bike, and unless you are doing really long runs 2-up you won't notice that much difference. Everytime you get to thinking that way, pull out a pic of the kid/kids and see what you have that's important. Your day will come.
As far as people flashing prices, CVOs, all there achievements, and telling how much they earn, I wish you all the best too - hope someone is as impressed as you are, that's what's important - Right. I'll ride my old bikes and enjoy the ride.
As I told my sister a couple weeks ago when she posted on one of my FB posts and asked where all the money comes from for all the extravagance. I replied by saying, working at the same job for nearly 20yrs busting my butt!!!! I don't have what others have. In fact I wonder the same thing sometimes when I look around and see people with 2 new vehicles, bike, boat and huge house. But its not for me to judge. Im responsible for me!!! Yes I have nice stuff and bought a 15 SGS last month. But traded in my 07 RK and 07 1200C.
I too am divorced and got all the credit card debt (that she ran up), my truck, her car, both bikes, my sons truck, and $900/mo child support!!!! I refinanced some stuff, traded her car off for a new 14 explorer and so far have made things work and better for myself. It also helps that my new GF works her butt off as well, AND likes to ride and wanted the new bike as much as I did.
Yeah and many people save every nickel for retirement and then they retire and die two years later... Some people spend money on exotic vacations... Some on $25,000 kitchen upgrades...to each his own...
