Default Ignition switch disassembly

All

I want to have the outer chrome cover of my ignition switch powder coated. Obviously, I can't do it with the lock/tumbler in there as sand from blasting and powder from coating would ruin the locking mechanism.

I have searched the forum and find links to You Tube videos on the removal of the ignition assembly (I got that part figured out) but nothing on a full disassembly of the housing.

Anyone ever done this? I know they make covers to go over the existing assembly but that adds bulk and I really don't want to spend $50 to $75 for a billet cover.....

thanks

What exactly are you getting powder coated.. The switch housing comes off with the key and a finger. Not much else to it

The outer chrome housing.

As stated, I know how to pull the ****/switch off the bike but don't know if it can be disassembled further. I would like to take just the chrome outer cover to the coater.

Wondering if you ever got an answer to this, I’m looking at this now, surprised that there’s no video. There's a dozen youtubes on how to remove the mechanism, very easy, but no way to take the cover off. JP cycles has a video where you stick on a jumbo sized cover, over the existing cover with double-sided tape, but the cover I got is meant to replace the existing cover.

just bumping an old thread that was not answered...

Default Inoperative ign switch

I hope someone can give me an answer to this. I pulled the switch to fill the forks on my '06 electra glide ultra. I reinatalled all the parts EXACTLY as they were removed, and the reinstall went smoothly. The switch will rotate through all positions, there is NO resistance to the operation, however, I cannot get the switch to turn on the electrics. No lights, starter, radio, nothing. I removed the switch & reinstalled it 4 times without success. Any suggestions? Thank you.

try turning the wheel all the way left. Then take a long screwdriver (with the switch removed) and sick it in the hole and turn it left. You should feel it click. I used a 1/4" copper tubing pounded flat instead of a screwdriver. Then install the switch in the fork locked position. Push it down and see if that helps. Good luck. It can be tricky.

I am having the same sort of issue...I have tried reinstalling several times but I either get it where it just wont really turn at all, or it does but will not engage any electronics. at work right now but will try the above suggested tip when I get home. hope it works. I have looked on youtube but couldn't find anything other than basic install.....could I get a link to the mentioned vid? thanks!
