With that out of the way, all it takes is one major engine issue to actually have the contract pay for itself.
The problem is, there is a much greater change that issue won't happen.

Default Not worth it.

In 2001 I bought the warranty on my FLHTCUI with the understanding I got my money back if I didn't use it. I didn't and I got my money back. In 2012 I bought a FLHTK and the warranty was $1300, and the "salesman" stated the same thing, that I would get my money back if I didn't use it. I didn't he lied. I didn't do my " due diligence " and really read the warranty. When I did that's when I realized I was screwed and the 5 year warranty which I thought was suppose to start after the factory 2 year warranty was running from day one. So in reality it was only for 3 years. I won't buy another warranty on any bike. I think the 2 year warranty that comes with the bike is plenty of time for anything to go wrong or show signs of a problem. As for a used bike pay to have it checked out by a competent mechanic and way the cost of the policy with what you " think " might happen down the road. Well I was just meaning to give my 2 cents worth but ended up being a nickel's worth. Anyway, good luck and ride safe.

Correct answer.
Prices are usually negotiable AT PURCHASE TIME.
If you choose to NOT have one, you need to have a plan for the "What if's".
Note: This is in reference to "Extended Warranty", not a "Service Plan".

I paid like $1200 for my Ext plan for 5 or 6 years can't remember. This price included wheel and tire.

This was on a new bike in 2014

Insurance companies wouldn't sell life insurance if they lost money on it, but you probably still have a policy.

While this is a true statement, it's really apples and oranges.

I am reasonably sure that I am going to die at some point. Having life insurance is betting I'll die before the policy lapses. As long as I keep paying the premium, the policy will live as long as me, and my heirs will be paid.

Extended warranty is betting the bike will break down before the policy lapses, usually 3 to 5 years. If I don't have confidence in the product, that I'd want to bet against it, I shouldn't buy it.

if my life insurance cost me $2000. and only paid out in the next 3 years, I wouldn't have it.

Here is a better idea. Send me the $1900. Then if you ever have a problem, I will decide if I think it should be covered. If you have a problem that is covered then I will pay the cost minus the deductible.

I bet after 3 years I still have money left in my pocket.

This is no different than the warranty companies...

is that 3 years on top of 2 equals 5? or 1 year on top of 2 equals 3 ?

read over the warranty contract- it is NOT with Harley-Davidson Motor Company or likely not the Dealer- it is with a 3rd party.

this contract is equal to about 10% the cost of the bike (and more if you are paying to finance it...)

pertinent questions:

exclusions- can you do common mods such as a tuner? don;t take a verbal- what does the contract say? can you change your wheels, shocks, exhaust?

does it cover added parts HD or other brand installed by you, or a shop or the dealer?

who does the repairs?

who can do routine services- under the HD warranty anyone can- even the owner.
some 3rd party warranties require the work done by specific shops.

where are you covered?

what if you are in Manitoba? or Omaha, or Vegas

what happens if the servicing company goes under?

those answers should be in the contract.

a.) you won;t find it online so you can look it over at your leisure
b.) you won;t find it at the parts counter or sales office until you are in the middle of negotiating a deal.
when you have no time to assess what is being sold.

the guy across the desk from you will earn $$$ if you sign up...yes, he IS your Friend...

GREAT advice from Mike as always!

As an aside note we bought a 2010 cts Cadillac and the Cadillac pre owned warrenty was extremly low. We bought it and now the car needs a $5000 engine because of oil consumption. This car is sucking oil like a drunk..And I am sure they will replace the engine. GLAD bought that warrenty!!
