is it a good investment to purchase an extended service plan when buying a used Harley/ any bike........... do dealerships have room to negotiate the price of such plans? $1900 3 years (everything is covered) thanks for the input ahead of time
you get 2 years of factory warranty with your new motorcycle.
so
is that 3 years on top of 2 equals 5? or 1 year on top of 2 equals 3 ?
read over the warranty contract- it is NOT with Harley-Davidson Motor Company or likely not the Dealer- it is with a 3rd party.
this contract is equal to about 10% the cost of the bike (and more if you are paying to finance it...)
pertinent questions:
exclusions- can you do common mods such as a tuner? don;t take a verbal- what does the contract say? can you change your wheels, shocks, exhaust?
does it cover added parts HD or other brand installed by you, or a shop or the dealer?
who does the repairs?
who can do routine services- under the HD warranty anyone can- even the owner.
some 3rd party warranties require the work done by specific shops.
where are you covered?
what if you are in Manitoba? or Omaha, or Vegas
what happens if the servicing company goes under?
those answers should be in the contract.
a.) you won;t find it online so you can look it over at your leisure
b.) you won;t find it at the parts counter or sales office until you are in the middle of negotiating a deal.
when you have no time to assess what is being sold.

The issue I have with extended warranties is who is the company.
Why HD does not bring it in house is beyond me, unless they think it is not a wise investment for them....
There is negotiation on that price, you used to be able to buy them from out of area dealers for short money on the internet but I heard there was some push back by the dealers on that.
I love the look on the F&I guys face when he tries to sell me an extended warranty and I reply " gee I am starting to have second thoughts about buying this because if you have to push an extended warranty for it it must not be a very good product"
and for the record I never buy an extended warranty, I am tens of thousands of dollars ahead of the game when the cost of repairs is compared against the cost of the policy.
Was on aa Bucket Trip last year and had an inner primary bearing go bad in Fargo ND. I had the ESP and after a deductable of $ 75.00 and 3 days was on our way. Bike was purchased new and 4 years old. Just my 2cents.
If I had a garage to work in there is a good chance I would not have bought the extended warranty, but, no garage, new bike model (Rushmore) that has shown signs in the past to have issues with the cooling system (hopefully not mine) I went for the piece of mind and bought the extra coverage.
