Just wanted to say hello and thanks for a great forum! I've been lurking for a while now and figured it was time to sign up. Been riding now for about 25 years give or take and have owned everything from sporties to a full blown softail custom that cost almost twice as much as my first house lol to a road king and my last MOCO machine was a 2002 Road Glide. Unfortunately I had to sell her back in 03 to pay for the land my house now sits on. I am going to be back in the market for another ride in the spring. I just had major cervical surgery done on the 7th of September so driving my truck is not an option right now let alone a bike. I've notieced lots of info and comments on this forum moreso than many others I am a member of about the Road Glide. Of all the bikes I have EVER owned and or ridden, the FLTRI was the most comfortable. It had and IMHO, does still have issues with design flaws from the MOCO. These are really mostly relating the the fairing - doing routine maintenance on the front end? pull the damn fairing off... lowering the front end? pull the damn fairing off... My main bitch about my 02 was really that doing much of anything on the front end required removing some part if not all of the fairing. Hey, piece of pie if you do it yourself and have the knowledge and time to do it. If not, flash some cash cuz it is gonna cost ya. Back in 02 the MOCO went to the single cartridge on teh left front fork (which the have abandoned now I believe) and that made NO sense. To lower the bike, I put in the guts of an 01 so I could lower both front and back... had to take the entire fairing off. Bottom line there was several hours of labor to remove and reinstall the fairing which equates to cash. A great thing if you're the dealer or servicing facility! However, still an awesome ride.
I am presently at a toss up between going with another Road Glide or an EG Classic. I like the looks of the Road Glide and of the traditional EG Classic as well. My glide had a king removable tour pak which was nice and regardless of the ride I end up with, that is something I'll have again. One thing I am curious about and would like some input on from anyone who cares to chime it, with my Road Glide it did not feel as the fairing was "in my face" - The EG series fairings seem to me that when riding they are considerably closer to the driver and hence "in your face".Both bikes are virtually identical and I will say that when I road my Glide, I got lots of "what the hell is that" looks. I did alot of mods to it and gave it that low slammed look without sacrificing comfort and will do it all over again regardless of which ride I choose. Prior to getting "cut" I visited the local stealer and I know that regardless of the ride I end of with, it will not be an 06 or later. Too many issues with the CAT systems and restrictions I'd have without spending a ton of money aka the MOCO tax.
Glad you found us, and thanks for joining. Only comment I have is that on my '05 EG, I still have the cartridge job in my left fork...at least I'm 99% sure on this one, and I don't have my manual in front of me. When I changed my forks out for chrome ones,I ended up pulling them off and taking them into the dealer and letting him swap out the guts. BLING, that was expensive, on the order of $125. Can't imagine what it would have been if he'd done the entire job.
i know this will sound dumb... but can you explain the catridge you are refering to in the left fork.

CAPTN AL, i cant believe that i may know the answer to this, but if i am correct there is a hydraulic cartridge on the left side of the fron fork to maintain pressure in the front suspension. that is why there is a funky screw on that side...forgive me if i am wrong, but i thought i heard that somewhere b4. as far as the EG being "in your face" i have never felt that way, i love my EG. i will tell you that i have never riden the road glide so i cant compare the two
Well thanks for all the warm welcomes! Capt Al, Screamin is correct there are hydraulics in the left leg that is basically a cartridge or at least on my 02 there was. The MOCO does some real funky things and this is one of them. I personally perceive no benefit in doing this. After more reading today, they may still indeed be doing the same thing today. It is fuggin non-sense IMHO or another fine example of the MOCO tax, imagine that will ya! I am so tired of my **** sitting round the house that a bud took me to the local stealer for a few and just got back in. Saw the new Ultra Sreaming Eagle in Emerald Green and Black. I think I could live with the color however, a leather tour pak? Sorry, jest not fer me. Stealer says oh sure we are putting in EFI maps and no troubles at all even with full true dual cross overs... bullshit lol.. There jest happened to be a Road Glide and an Ultra sat side by side so I ever so carefully sat on each and the fairing was not really as "in my face" as I thought. On the Road Glide, I had to reach a good way to adjust the radio etc while the the EG, it was right there which was pretty nice. I personally jest like the clean "less is more" looks of the Road Glide. A shining example would of that would be the new Street Glide. It'll invariably come down to which bike I can get the best deal on in a resale situation. I'd go with an EG Classic and strip it down to get the Street Glide look aka low, lean and mean which is what I did with my Road Glide. A possible alternative depending upon what after market exhaust manufacturers do or don't come out with would be a Peace Officer Ultra. As a Peace Officer I can get an 06 Ultra for $18,300 plus tax, tag and title. No set up or BS fees added. IMHO, with most if not all of the 07's that will hit the floor before we know it, they will have the CATs included.
If the folks over at Rineheart and Samson don't come up with an alternative that works, it will put a hurtin on their bottom line. I personally can't see myself paying $18,000 and or more for a bike that is anemic and sounds like a damn VW when they start it. That dawg jest ain't gonna hunt as they say in the south and as for paying a MOCO tax to get it right and or better of say, $1,000 plus after the fact...read my lips, hell no.
Hello, I'm also new to HD forum. I've ordered my second new H-D, an '06 Road Glide in Black Pearl with a delivery date of 11/9. I've never owned a touring bike and am chomping at the bit to get my hands on it. I prefer to do all my own wrenching and it is very rare that I bring my bike to anyone for service. I am vertically impaired at 5'6", and while I can touch the ground on the FLTRI, I need to immediately lower it in order to safely operate it. I'm only interested in lowering the rear in the short term and am wondering what are the best shocks to accomplish this. H-D's profile low touring shocks are reasonable priced (I suppose) at $275 and lower the rear up to 3/4", but if any members know of a better alternative out there, I'd like to know about it.
Also, I want to change the slip-on mufflers (naturally) immediately also. I love the Reinhart exhaust, but am not willing to shell out that kind of dough at this time. I really dig the look of the Python slip-ons and am leaning that direction. Not sure if re-mapping will be necessary for these slip-on's as it is rumored that the '06's will have an o2 sensor which should compensate for the slip-on's. If anyone can shed some light on this also it would be appreciated.
