you can do what ever you want.
if your added "powerpoint" is for an mp3 player, phone, gps etc. many of us use the Euro-spec position light wiring which is attached to the headlight loom the capped orange/wht is +, the blk is ground:
for higher current draw devices, it is easy to run power from the battery ...you need wire, a fuse and 10 minutes to pull the gas tank off.

I use this mounted on the Right side in about the same place the cig lighter is on the left side.
