Do you have the Street tuner or the Pro tuner? The autotune on the SEPST is called Smart Tune and if you have the Orange VCI and the cables then you have smart tune. When did you buy the tuner? Trying to see how old it is because they do have some differences, the older units were called SERT and I know very little about them.
I have the pro tuner. Its less then a week old. I used the smart tune. Took forever to find the recordings. Wanted to use Mytune to fine tune the tune the tuner made.
My Ultra Limited has a Vance & Hines 2-1-2 headpipe, 4" Rinehart slip-ons, stage 1 breather, and the POS Dealer download. Been having some popping going on - on decal, since I bought the bike new.
I have a decent size credit at my local HD, and am considering having a Screamin' Eagle Pro Super Tuner - SEPST installed.
Here's my dumb question. Is this sufficient to "tune" the bike, or is a Dyno also required?
Yes the Screamin Eagle Super Tuner will fix the issue you have. I have used SEPST on all of my bikes and I have never had any issues. You can buy the tuner, & cables, Software can be downloaded for free. It's easy to use. A lot of people suggest this tuner, that tuner, because they are plug and play piggy back units to leave connected to the bike. Not necessary. You get the tuner and cables, software.
IMO, why buy a piggy back unit, when you can buy a unit that you can do so much more with.
I have the Stage 1 download on my 99 Ultra with SE slipons and a K&N air filter, or atlast I was told this by the previous owner. If I have the download, can I still buy a SEPST and smart tune it? Also, all the SEPST I can find online for sale are for 01 and later. What about us with pre-01's?
I don't know if it is still available, but Harley made a programmable ECU for the MM bikes. It was actually a rebranded S&S VFI. If you have one or can find one, you can download the S&S Protune software from the S&S website for free. You can even add a wideband O2 sensor kit to it for autotune.

Thanks Griffindenim! So, at this point, a Dyno would be optional? It appears just the SEPST will complete the tune?

Correct. A SEPST with the correct settings and know how you can get pretty damn close to a Dyno. A Dyno hits all of the variable throttle positions and speeds in a controlled area. But you can do some smart tune runs and update your VE tables to correct your issue. You can do a live tune as well and see where you are getting the popping and then adjust accordingly.
Most likely you will have to order the cables. As they probably don't have them in stock. If they do even better. On the page below is a training video and the download for the software. It's not hard to use. You don't have to have it installed, YOU install and become familiar with it. Very EASY install. Plug and play install and you won't have to pay them labor to install a BS stage 1 download.
