The cam cover on the right side does allow you to look at the outbound tensioner and the inside one you need a small mirror since it is behind the cam support plate. Look on YouTube as there are some great videos giving you a good idea how much is involved. A service manual is also worth picking up if you're going to do some of the maintenance yourself. Enjoy!
Hey Boochman, ses gave u good advice. Your 03 and my 06 came with the spring loaded cam chain tensioners. It is a weak spot in our 88 twin cams. You didn't mention how many miles?
I've already upgraded mine to the SE hyd tensioner kit. With this mod our engines should easily run to 100,000 and beyond. Part of the kit is a high volume oil pump. That higher oil pressure sure looks good on the gauge!
If you bought the bike secondhand it is just possible some work has already been done. glasspilot mentions the hydraulic tensioner kit, which is a popular upgrade, another is gear-drive cams, but if your bike is still stock the later tensioners are an economical alternative and will give reasonable life. There are several ways to skin this particular cat, but the first move could be to take a peak in there to see if anyone has been in before!
First thing would be to get a service manual.
You have to pull the exhaust.
Pull the cam cover.
You'll need a cam cover gasket.
Like mentioned above there's videos on YouTube that will help.
