I got home from my ride tonight and it had just gotten dark. I got off the bike and noticed a red glow (pretty bright!). It was right at the Y pipe at the rear cylinder. I checked the front pipe and didn't see it glowing red although it is covered a little more. It went dark after a few minutes. Is this ok? I just don't remember any of my other bikes doing this but this is my first Harley.
Very common. Mine does it at times and I have a '05 rk custom. Your '07 runs real lean from the factory. Which is hot by their design. The front pipe gets more air and may not be as hot as the rear, so it may not have that glow. From what I have read here, it is normal. Did you add any fuel management system to your bike? ie pc III or sert? That will cool it down some. And from what I have read about your '07, if you think it is hot now, wait until summer gets here. I hear it can get real uncomfortable. You may want to look into a true dual system. Full sac has a setup that is very reasonable priced. But you can't go wrong with Vance and Hines, from what I have read here on the forum.
I rode today and it was about 85 degrees out. It really doesn't feel all that hotter to me than my 1500 Kawasaki V-Twin (liquid cooled). I always thought Harley's should feel pretty darned hot when sitting still anyway. I guess I can thank the EPA for my glowing pipe. I have an appointment to put on some options that I bought with the bike. I was planning on having them put on a set of SE slip on's, a high flow A/C and a re-map of the ECM at that time. These were all per the Service managers recommendation.
That will definatley help. Just remember that these harley are air cooled, not like the bikes (metric) thatI rode when I was younger. You will fine, and as it was told to me 'welcome to the dark side'.
There is a map they can download on your stock machine which will help with this. Takes about 15 minutes and H-D doesn't charge for it. They have a bulletin about it. It's actually for some other BS with the bike but it took care of the red pipe on mine.
