Great news Craig!

Let us know how that works out for you. I think Bill Norse has a point. Bet you eventually end up with something in the EG family. Good luck, and ride safe!

ORIGINAL: RoadKingClassic

Thanks everyone! Great input except for the neandertal (you know who you are. Have the person reading this to you explain what "neandertal" means.). I think destiny played it's hand today. I went to the local Harley Dealer to get parts/tools. I am going to do my own inspections. Walked in and there was a beautiful used Road King with a quick-relaease FAIRING on it. Spoke with the parts guys and they showed me the infinite ways to windscreen/fairing the Road King. I sat on a RK with a Sundowner touring seat. BIG difference. After buying parts I walked outside and there was a guy starting his Ultra Classic. Looked like he had stock pipes and they were almost inaudible. Not good at "bike night" but must be awesome on the road. Didn't get a chance to chat with the guy but he looked like a hardcore tourer (he had soft packs strapped to ALL THREE of his hard bags).

Cleaned the bike today and put it on a stand to work on it. It is awesome looking and I DO love the sound of the SEIIs around town. Right combination of seat, screen and pipes (and helmet?) and I'm sticking with Harley. I am retracing the N. Michigan trip at the end of the month with new seat, windscreen and stock pipes. Thanks again everyone. Big help. Love the Forum, too. Bike pics are forthcoming.

Your an experienced rider....you are now riding the Harley. It's not a goldwing. Your RKC is more of a traditional bike. You are used to the full fairing and tall windshield of the Goldwing. You might want to consider the Ultra Classic as a good choice for you as a Harley. It rides smooth and has no wind buffetting and I have a smaller windshield too as I am 6'3" tall. Look into one and you will not think about going back to the Honda.

Good luck in your search....

And can someone say that a loaded Ultra Classic is a comparable touring bike to the Goldwing? Actually it would have to be comparable to TWO of them since it is approaching twice the price
...according to the Honda website '06 Goldwings run from $19000 to $22500 with no price listed for the top of the line Goldwing.
...according to the Harley website '06 Ultra's run from $19795 to $20685.
...everyone is entitled to their opinions bro....but facts is facts, get em right. Now what will be their comparable resale value 5 years from now? Thats when the Harley will cost twice as much

glad to hear you got some problems solved. On long rides, it's the wind noise that bothers me not the pipes. Have found that full faced helmets actually amplify the noise of both the pipes and wind. Thats why I wear ear plugs. Guess what...had to wear em riding a Honda also. Guess that's why the motorcycle gods make so many different kinds.

Ride safe bro, whatever you end up with, Buck

Wow...what an intersting post here!

Sounds like you needed to start with an Electra Glide Standard - -the tour capability, classic good looks, without all the fuss - but, hind sight is 20-20...
I ride mine everywhere, and she is like a caddy to me (compared to my first bike, a 2001 1200 Custom )- - but I usually like to take a break every 100 miles or so to top off (maybe an old habit from the 3.3 tank?)... not because I need gas...but just like to get off my *** and stretch abit...As for SEII's and all...just go back to stock...lot's of folks do, nothing wrong with it for most people...personally, I like to be seen and heard in traffic (I ride 40 miles to Washington DC to go to work).....waking up non-attentive drivers is one of my favorite things to do

I am also 6ft tall, and yes, the windshield bugged my vision..so I went with an aftermarket dark shaded 8 inch windscreen...works great, looks better!

Glad you like the King after the mods...I'm a RK fan too, but only tried it in the demos - -I like the way they look..then again, I like the way all HDs look, that's just me..

I'm glad you stayed Harley...it just takes a little tweaking to set the bike up the way you want it. I promise you - now that you're hooked...you're hooked for good.
