How can you tell that the stand is locked? Mine never seems to be.

I leave it in 1st, put the stand down and give the bike a push forward once its on the stand to insure the stand still locks the way its supposed to. You can feel it grab when you push it forward about an inch or so then it settles back. The new locking stands are great and the bike wont start in gear anyway. Great improvement from the older bikes.

Always in first. I also check for the green N before I start unless I am on the bike.

both, depending on the situation, and sometimes I just forget to find neutral when parking. I have a 5 speed in my truck and always leave it in gear. So, the same with the bike, usually. Gotta hold the clutch in on the truck, and hold the clutch in on the bike, so doesn't really matter either way to me. But, I have a carb on my bike, and on those cold nights after work, I let it warm up while I am getting the gear on. Just look for the green light, pull the choke and start her up.

in 1st all the time. bike won't start in gear and 'jump' like they used to. Drove sticks for so long .... leaving car in 'gear' is just natural.
[sm=confused06.gif]I'm not sure HD is as technology advanced as you are yet. Don't try it or you may be disappointed. Always leave it in neutral, starting with the clutch pulled inand always park so the natural grade of the ground is falling towards the back of the bike. Makes things alot easier when trying to back out.

You can always spot a new HD rider because they jump out of their skin thinkingthe bike may roll forward and fall off the jiffy stand. [sm=yikesomg.gif]

I was told to leave it in 1st pushing it forward until the trans engages so no one can accidently push it forward and knock it off the stand. My bike won't start in gear so it is not a big deal.
Just completed the MSF Advanced Rider Course (ref AIM May 2007 issue Page 40), can't tell you how many times the instructors checked our parked bikes to ensure it was in 1st gear. Not sure if this was a thing with our instructors or part of the MSF course, but it didn't take long to get the message. Their reasoning: with trans engaged no one can accidentally push it forward and knock it off of the stand.
