Default Metzler 888

Having read the endless kudos for the Commander II, was curious what people think about the Metzler 888.

I think more people are impressed with the 888's over the Commanders II's because from what I deduced, the original Commander's gave the whole Commander series a bit of a bad name and people just see the Commander II as a "Commander.". But Metzler's been doing this for so long, they really have it down pat. They are only improving upon a good product whereas Michelin's Commander II is only improving a mediocre product.

Just from all the years of casual research I've done. Fyi, if it'll save you any money, I've always had good success with factory Dunlops.

A friend of mine ran Metzlers for a while. On one trip we went to leave my house and he found a big chunk out of the rear tire. On another trip we were in Leadville, Colo. and when we started to leave the motel he found a chunk out of the rear tire. Had to limp to Denver and wasted almost a day.

I briefly ran Metzlers on a 2005 Classic, but traded it before I really got a comprehensive assessment.

I had Commander II's on a 2012 Limited that I totaled. The tires had 14,000 at the time and there was still a lot of tread on the rear. These tires handled better than Dunlops or the Metzlers.

I replaced the Limited with one just like it with 2,000 miles on it. I can tell you that the Commander II's with 14,000 miles handled better than the Dunlops on the new bike with only 2,000. As soon as these Dunlops wear out I will be getting Commanders.

As far as price goes, a friend of mine just got a set of Commanders and they were a little cheaper than Dunlops.

I have run a couple of sets of 888's and have been fine with them, getting about 17 - 18K miles each time. Recently rode on a 5 state poker run in northwestern Oklahoma and ran into pretty heavy rain two out of three days and while it was basically highway riding both times the tires didn't seem to give me any problems at highway speeds.

I have ran Metzeler tires in the past but, they were the 880 not the 888. From what I understand the 880 has been discontinued and been replaced by the 888. Also I had read that Metzeler tires are being made in Brazil now which raised concerns about quality control. After reading on four different forums about tires there has been minimal reports or complaints about the quality of the 888 tire. There are pros and cons to each tire manufacturer, some people prefer the stock Dunlop tires and others are looking for longer lasting higher mileage tire.

I just got new tires for this riding season and I went with the 888 on my Street Glide. The only negative that I have read is that Metzeler are vague with tire pressures and I do know they run a higher pressure than stock Dunlop. I had them installed with dyna beads and will be closely monitoring tire pressure if I get the same mileage of the stock Dunlop tires 10k on both front and back (only replaced due to dry rot) then I will be satisfied.

i ran the 880 on my 08 Ultra and liked the way they handled plus I got almost 15K out of them. Just put the 888 on the 13RK and the wife's 12 FLSTC but we only have a few hundred on them so far but no issues and don't expect any. Tires are almost like oil; everyone has a favorite.

I am putting a couple more pounds of air in them than the stock Dunlops, think 40 front and 42 rear unless someone can point me in right direction on pressures. If I remember correctly Metzler used to actually put recommended pressures on the web but I couldn't find the right info using google this time.
