1. I personally would wire them into an accessory circuit, so they come on say with other lights, rather than when you first switch the bike on, or wire them separately with their own switch.
I got the ones from Autozone. I got two of the large 12" strips (the larger one of the two sizes) and one 6" that I put under the breather and ran them to the aux switch. I didn't splice any wires, I unplugged the harness and slid the wires in. They're bright and have been on there for about two years with no led failures. They come with 3m tape and taped them to the bottom of the tank and air cleaner housing. I think I might have spent $30-40 if that much. The a/c blocks alot of the light on the right side. I probably could have put one behind the horn, but was satisfied with it.

there's two spade terminals on the headlight socket that are used only for international bikes. you can plug LEDs into there and they will come on as you wanted. but you can't turn them off unless you do something like graham brown suggested.
I spent a lot of time researching many of the different types of LED's. I finally settled in on Joe Florida. Great service they are quick to answer the phone and answer all your questions. They provide directions to putting the lights on. They are the only company I found that offers a phone app that allows customization of a billion colors. They offer other items as well like a light for you tour pack that comes on when you open it. Very reasonable.
I install LED Accent lights on bikes. My website is: www.mc-illuminations.com. Check it out and tell me what you think. I get people from all over to get my install. Light kits usually come pre wired and are small strips. I make the led's to fit your bike. My prices are the best anywhere. Mine come with a remote with 9 functions. You can have just a on/off switch too. Go to my website and contact me on there. You can also see some of my projects.
