Help picking a touring model, so confused...Help please.
I am looking to get a second bike, this one for longer (4-5 hour) trips, 2 up.
Right now I am on a 2014 VROD Muscle, and picked up the corbin seat and a gel topper and that can go about 90 miles for passenger comfort.
I just can't get rid of the the VROD, love it, so I am not ready to go into a 2015 or 2014 and 25k, but would like something that would have the basics I am looking for.
Fairing
Hard Side bags
Upper bag with the arm rests (Removable)
Fuel injection
and 6 gallon tank
While this doesn't seem very specific, it does encompass just about every bike...between the different models I may have narrowed it down to about a 2009 Ultra Glide, but it seems as though there is also the street Glide and the Electra glide.
How to narrow it down to years and models and trying to stay around 14k or less?
Of course the 2009 seems to be running around 12ish. Could I go older and still get the minimums? Or are there any real drastic changes for a specific year that would bring in more bang for the buck?
Thanks so much, I know I need to ride to really get the feel, but if I could narrow it down a little, that would help quite a bit.
02-06 88 inch motor good reliable bikes,07-08 96 inch motor 08 got 6 gallon tank kinda bastard years but can be a bargain,09-13 new frame and many with 103 motor handling is more stable and have higher load ratings. as for models i would look at ultras,u can find street glides with tour packs it is pricey to add one.the sg also has shorter shocks on the rear so 2 up ride can suffer.ultra limited has more bells than the ultra and adding those bells to an ultra is pricier than msrp.
what ever you get, i'd try and stick to the 103 and 6 speed. that makes it a newer model....2012 or 2013. i like the ultra classic or limited because of the extra space the trunk/tour pac gives you. i had a 2010 ultra classic and upgraded to my 2013 ultra classic limited with the 103 and really like it. good luck, you have some hard choices to make......
02-06 Ultras with the 88/5 speed are a good reliable bike, especially if they had their cam chain tensioners upgraded.
Street Glides have less suspension travel. If they have the detachable tour pack, great. Otherwise expensive to add.
I get more than 180 miles on a 5 gallon tank, and am usually happy to stop by then
There are some great deals right on HDF classified right now.
What is the general opinion on something like a 1996 Ultra around 6k?
I think I will probably be trading in both next season for a 15 or something new.
I think with the Street glide no rear pack might work as good as the Vrod and would merge both into one. Thats the reason trying to stay a cheap as possible, without giving up too much stuff.
when i decided to get a touring bike, wanted something that i could use to satisfy the wife and take things like the saddle bags and tour pack off if i wanted... for me the ultra limited was the bike to get, i rode a couple of them and really liked the way the 2012 handled VS. the 2008.. i thought the 2008 was like trying to throw a square block around, the 2012 was much more nimble.... i spent more then i wanted but am well pleased with it and will keep it for years to come... it has everything i want and stuff i will use down the road when the time comes... no regret on what i spent, it has the 103 and 6 speeds, i wouldnt want anything less
