I have a 2001 flhtpi and I would like to get a cruise control on it as it didnt even come with the manual one. I did have a clamp one on my last bike and hated it. Is the harley one any better? Could I go to a bone yard and get a electronic cruise unit from a 99 or 2001 and install it on my bike without changing the ecm. Did anyone do this and what where the outcomes? Are there aftermarket electronic cruise units for my bike? Thanks
The HD one works very well. You should be able to add it to your as I have been told all of the wires to hook to are already there. One note on the dark side of thing, you can ride no handed !!!
You can add an HD cruise unit easily if you spend $170 for the wiring harness provided by Dave of Cruisemount. Here is a link to his website which is very explicit about what will work or not work:
According to his website, he can provide the harness you will need to install the HD cruise unit on your '01 TPI. He used my '04 as a prototype to create the wiring harness and my system works great.
Could you do it yourself? If you want to spend hours looking at the HD wiring diagram and then finding the wires on your bike. Ditto, if you want to replace the wiring harnesses on the bike with civilian versions.
If you go with the Cruisemount harness, you will have approximately 10 or fewer wires to connect; a couple by the ECM, and the rest inside the fairing. With that exception, his is a plug and play install; of course, you still have to install the HD cruise unit.
