Default Clutch cable broke at 8k

08 SG with 8100 miles cable broke at handle, ring broke in half while riding. Had to get trailered home 30 mile which to bad if its going to happen.
Anyway had a problem with clutch engaging when wheel was sharply turned to the right. You could leave clutch out and there was no engagement until wheel was straightened. Adjusted clutch per manual which corrected the problem. Little different friction point on the handle but all was good. Week later the freaking thing snapped. Any ideas or thoughts on what would cause this? Thanks in advance ..

Sure...with only 8100 miles in 7 years, the cable probably dried out from lack of use. Leaving them sit is hard on the machinery.

Huh? A steel cable "dried out"? If it broke right at the ferrule, I bet the cable was defective or it was rubbing on the lever housing.

if it wouldn't work right when the bars were turned to the right, i would guess the cable was routed wrong somewhere. they have to be routed right to work right.

yeah, that is what I was thinking...when i chanced mine the first time i routed it wrong and had that same type of issues. rerouted it correctly and it fixed that problem (but it also broke at the lever a couple years later).

I am currently going through my RK at 10,000 miles. Using the Service manual and being experienced with rebuilding cars and dirt bikes, etc. I figure I can handle the maintenance on this bike.

I'm reading the Clutch Cable section and it clearly states to use HARLEY LUBE to lubricate the cable. Its one of the few sections where it specifies what to use. I just crack up when I see this stuff. Because, most people figure its so the MOCO sells more oil and such. But if you look at the beginning of the service manual you must be a "Qualified" mechanic to work on these bikes. That's legaleze for as soon as you make one modification to this bike, be it an adjustment, addition of lube, etc. You have removed the MOCO responsibility and negated your ability to sue them for a defective bike or part. Now, I know people will sue them anyway, but that service manual will be the first thing brought up in court. First question from the MOCO defense attorney..."Are you a qualified Harley Technician?"

To prove my point, I was in the dealership the other day at the parts counter. The parts guy answered the phone and was being asked if putting aftermarket slip ons that he purchased from the dealer would void his warranty. The answer was yes. But then the parts guy said, just put the originals back on and bring it in...everybody does it!

I was like WTF? really?
