Ding, ding, ding we have a winner on yet ANOTHER oil thread. Spectro taught us a lot about oil, what is needed to protect gears, and that's why we help promote their product. They don't pay us and we don't get our oil for free. Redline is also another good oil, I use it myself, you want to know why we recommend what we recommend. Read what Spectro taught us:

All good, and thanks - but the article doesnt say what is different/better about Spectro's GL-5 vs any other GL-5. Any insight? Information helps to make an informed decision.

You may have missed this part from the article:
"Most GL-5 rated lubes are not compatible with GL-1 applications because GL-5 oils contain high pressure additives that attack bright metals such as copper, brass, and bronze that can be found in some transmissions. Oils such as Spectro 6 Speed contain special buffers that allow this GL-5 rated oil to be used in GL-1 applications without fear of bright metal damage. GL-1 oils should never be used in GL-5 applications. They wont cause any physical damage to metals but they also wont stand up to the intense pressure found in a GL-5 environment."

Still it says "oils such as Spectro 6-speed...".
But the other question is: Is a 2013 FLTRU a GL-1 application? My owners manual recommends Formula + or Syn 3, but it doesnt say what GL is recommended.

Your question asked what made Spectro better or different and I provided the answer per the article. Your follow on question is covered within the text of the article and entirely up to you to glean the information you require. It was said in the article that Syn is motor oil. Motor oil is not recommended per the article for various reasons and subject matter expert advice.
Not to be a dick, Mark@Baker, but if Spectro taught you so much about oil, but you personally use Redline, WTF does that say about Spectro?
I was using Redline before Spectro starting helping us and it has always worked for me. If it ever fails me guess who will get my business. By the way do you drink Coke or Pepsi?
