I wonder why Baker recommends Spectro? Is it because, in their opinion, it is great stuff? Or is it more of a business thing where they profit somehow from its endorsement? Didn't they used to recommend Redline? What happened? Sorta like ....what came first, the chicken or the egg...Did Baker get a deal from Spectro 1st or after they decided it was the best.
Its a really good oil. Bandit also recommends this oil. I imagine Baker only recommends what works best with their products. Im not sure if they even sell Spectro oil. Not sure how they would profit from the customer using said oil.
Bigtwins, Run some Spectro Platinum full synthetic in your transmission and see for yourself. The mechanics in my local Harley shop run Spectro oils in their own Harleys. I'll leave it at that.
Yes, in no way do I question Baker or their reputation. As far as I know they are Sterling. I also understand business is business. Obviously, the whole lubricant question is at the forefront of all our minds. I think we feel like it is one of very few elements within our control and that is why I, and others, obsess on it. Unfortunately, evidence for using or switching to a particular lubricant seems to be 95% anecdotal and subjective. I change motor oil every 2500, primary and tranny every 5000. Am I an idiot? Probably!! Does it mater what the hell I use at that frequency? I just don't really know.
I live not to far from Baker, when the guys have trouble they take there transmissions to them for rebuilds, both bikes are Big Dog's. I've been there lots of times and got to know some of the guys. One of them just told me last week he only puts Red Line Shock Prof in his bike, a Harley.
They have cases of Spectro on hand, but don't really sell to the public. I'm sure they would if you was there and ask for it. About a year ago I ask them what was the best, all they really could say was there is 3 kinds they like, the 2 before mentioned, and for the life of me I cant remember the 3rd.
They probably know what most already know (especially the oil manufacturers)- negligible difference. So, knowing the value of having their customers see this and post to forums, Spectro probably gives them their oil for free.
