I also have Amsoil 20/50 in my motor, the primary stuff in the primary and the new tranny fluid in the tranny. Seems to be good. Guy at work here is a rep, gave me a deal and runs it in his 3 HDs. I trust him, so I gave it a try.
Now, the people that run the severe gear 75/90 - isn't that like the viscosity of a pickuptruck rear end? The amsoil stuff seemed "thinner" than rear end fluid to me.
I did notice though that my local HD had some Amsoil for sale - but not the primary and tranny stuff - just motor oil and the severe gear. Not sure if they don't think its any good or if they just haven't gotten around to stocking it...
Just switched to amsoil for all 3 with their specific dedicated products. I find the same as most. Shifts smoother less engine noise.
Seems to runs smoother all around. Going on a decent run on the weekend will be fully loaded and riding two up, temperatures expected to be mid 80s. Interested to see how things go.
Yeah, I thought it was interesting that Amsoil's 1st choice recommendation is their 20-50 oil in all 3 holes, even though they have a tranny and primary specific product.
I just put the amsoil trans/gear oil in an it shifts smoother an quieter. I read that the old Harley formula primary fluid was basicly a 30 wt oil I tried amsoil 10w40 in the primary an the clutch is smooth. I got the trans/gear oil from an HD dealership for $18, the AMSOIL from rural king for $10 a qt. when I drained the trans what came out smelled like gear oil an was on the thick side so I assume it was gear oil an the ams shifts better.
I've been on the Amsoil bandwagon sense 2001,and it's the best I've ever used.I used it in my 01 FLHT,and was so impressed, with it that i became a dealer. Now I run it in all my macks and KWs. I use alot of it,and if anyone want's to try it out,I get 9.20 a quart for 20W-50,that's what I give for it.the chrome filter for harley is the real standout,Wouldn't be saying without knowing.dealership is asking 17.00 a quart, and that's just wrong.go for it it's great oil.
I have run GL5 rated gear oils in my transmssions from day one. In my stock 6 speed cruise drive for 130 k miles and now in my Baker DD7. Below is a link to a pretty good article written by Burt Baker on the merits of running a GL5 rated gear lube in your transmission versus motor oil. I know that most anything will work but there is a difference between motor oil and gear lubes and also between motor oils and Primary specific oils. Especially on bigger builds
That being said I have thrown ATF in my primary when nothing else was available and I had to change a broken primary chain adjuster in the Motor Lodge parking lot in Kalispel MT. It worked just fine.
Re tranny fluid...I talked with the Royal Purple factory guy about their gear oils (75/140 full synthetic GL4 GL5 rated gear oil. Reading that some of the GL5 only gear oils can attack some of the bushing materials (bronze or brass if I remember right) he said theirs is GL4 GL5 rated and since it includes the GL4 rating, it is safe for Harley transmissions. Further said you run a risk with some straight GL5 gear oils ...some of which can damage bronze brass etc trans materials. Just passing on what I have read, and what he said about straight GL5. Very happy with how it shifts. Apparently, 75/90 in practice/operation, is thinner at temp than some of the 20/50 oils....apparently is from reading on the subject....
I also us B&M trick shift full high grade synthetic trans fluid in my primary.
