Riding home from work Friday on my 13 rg ultra the heal shifter went all the way to the floor board while shifting into 4th gear. When I tried down shifting with the toe shift it down shifted but it also went to the floor and the heal was way up. They are both tight on the shaft and there was a lot of play in the shifter. I limped home with a two speed and put it in the garage but the shift and linkage seem normal now.
You might take the shifter off and look at the splines. The shaft is harder material, doesn't usually wear out. Also, the slop may be in the shifter at the transmission. Check the play down there, where the linkage hooks to the tranny.
Back out the hex head bolts but take them completely out, then remove shift levers. Best guess is the shifters are stripped but have had my spline strip as well. Of course my bike is much older so chances are just your levers are stripped. Some plumbing tape may help you get to a shop for replacements if necessary. When getting everything right make sure to use blue loctite on the hex head bolts.
First bike I've kept longer than the warranty. I'm 2 months past the two years. I'm glad opinions are all pointing to linkage didn't want to think about the transmission being gone already.

When you remove the shaft really inspect the inner leaver and shaft area. Insure alls good and the fit is square, and the gap in the leaver is not closed as you tighten the bolt tighter than dicks hat band. A good inspection now may save some frustration later.
The spline seems to be OK but inner part that connects the shifter to the linkage just slid off. I'm going to back the hex bolt out, get it lined up and tighten it up using some loctite.
Just got home from a week long ride that covered kansas city to memphis, tail of the dragon, atlanta , myrtle Beach and Chicago before returning home. That was the first time I had been on it since the trip. Good timing I guess.
